I’ve got a gazillion books waiting for me to read, both on my Kindle and my bookshelf, so when I picked this up at the library I thought I’d just flip through this and it would tide me over until the last Percy Jackson book Blood of Olympus comes out on 10/7 (sniff). I should have known better. Starting with the introduction: “A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like,’can we do this anonymously? Because I don’t need the Olympians mad at me again.’ But if it helps you know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week.” , it’s obvious this isn’t going to be your average book about Greek myths. Told from Percy’s POV this is not only educational but hysterically funny. Accompanied by John Rocco’s beautiful illustrations, it’s a perfect addition for YA and adult fans of Percy Jackson. I underscore YA and adult, because I wouldn’t recommend this for younger children due to the numerous references to rape and incest. That’s not to say they don’t belong. I mean, let’s face it, just like Grimm’s Fairytales, nasty things happen in myths. I just think that something like D’Auliere’s Book of Greek Myths would probably be more appropriate for younger fans. Otherwise I loved this book so much that I’ve asked Santa for it for Christmas. I know I’ll be re-reading it.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s possible to write an accurate account of Greek myths and have it appropriate for little kids, they were different times back then. I passed on this because I already have plenty of Greek mythology books, but I didn’t realize Percy told the story! I so need it now! I can’t wait until Blood of Olympus!!

I think you would love this! It’s not some skinny overpriced little book either. It’s over 300 pages and is coffee table sized! I thought I knew pretty much all the Greek gods and goddesses, but did you know there was a god of vegetable gardens? Yep. His name was Priapus and he made a pass at Hestia which didn’t go over too well with her brothers. Today’s garden gnomes spring from him. Who knew? I can’t believe Blood of Olympus is going to be the last Percy book. I heard his next series will center around Norse mythology though!

Oh Gimmie! hehe. No, I didn’t know there was a gnome god. Riordan obviously did his research. I did hear that the next series would be Norse mythology, he announced the name of it last week and the boy’s last name is Chase! I hope he’s Annabeth’s step-brother! How cool would that be?!

Oh! I missed the announcement. I’ll have to go check out his site. That would be totally awesome if he turned out to be Annabeth’s stepbrother! Kind of a continuation of the saga.

I swear you won’t be sorry. For me it’s tied in first place with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

I know! I picked it up in the store, and got maybe a little hysterical. It’s just so pretty, and the hilarious chapter names are back! I definitely think Santa will be doling out a lot of that book this year.

Oh thank goodness I’m not the only one. I still have the library copy and I keep walking around with it hugged to my chest. I’m starting to freak out my husband! I’m so glad it’s reasonably priced.
