Just when I think I’ve heard it all. A “Christian” woman has rewritten Harry Potter because she’s afraid if her children read the original they’ll become witches. Yep. You’ve read that correctly. Grace Ann Parsons has penned Hogwarts: School of Prayers and Miracles. Seriously? I’m going back and forth between being outraged to laughing hysterically. Honestly. What is the matter with these people? I’m not even going to list the many Christian symbols that are in this book and the prevailing themes of love, loyalty, courage, and good triumphing over evil, because you know what? It doesn’t even matter. If you don’t like the books and you really think your children will start waving wands around and performing evil spells on an unsuspecting populace, how about reading a series like The Chronicles of Narnia instead? For some reason which I don’t understand most people who disapprove of Harry Potter love C.S. Lewis’s books. While I’m a fan, it doesn’t make sense to me because his books also feature magic, witches, etc… I think they just see that he was a conservative Christian writer so anything he wrote is acceptable. This woman has had the unmitigated gaul to think she can just take a book and rewrite it to suit her agenda. I know Jo Rowling has little patience for plagiarism so I hope she hauls this woman into court. Because that’s what this is, plagiarism, and I don’t think it should be ignored. I’m climbing down from my soapbox down.

I’ve just been on fanfiction.net to have a look and it’s pretty out there. I have a feeling (or am hoping) it’s satirical but you never know.

She’s not only using it with her children but is offering it to other people who think reading Harry Potter will turn their children into wicked witches.

Very ridiculous. I hope J.K. goes after her. I used to go to a church where the preacher’s wife actually was a bit of a fan of Harry Potter.

I think it’s sad that some people don’t let their children read certain books because they’re about witches. I don’t understans why she didn’t write her own book instead since ahe disapproves of Harry Potter. If you take out the witches and magic then it isn’t really Harry Potter anyway.

I agree. I would have had more respect for her if she had done that, rather than taken Rowling’s work and twisted it to suit her own agenda.

Great post Kim, I had no idea!! I’m between outrage and hysteria also, especially at the title. What I would suggest to this lady, is if you don’t like it – don’t read it. Don’t rewrite it to suit yourself or if you must then keep quiet about it! What next? 50 Innocent Shades of Magnolia? (not that rewriting a monstrosity like that would bother me like the Harry P series but you know what I mean!!)

I love what you said about he Harry P books too and the themes on courage and friendship. They are some of the nicest books any kids could read! People are dumb (pure and simple) if they see wands and wizards and genuinely see something dark in it. And I’d say Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe are darker than the Harry P books too!

It really annoys me someone takes it upon themselves to do something like this. AND put it on the internet. She could have done it for her kids and kept quiet (at best).
Like we’ve both said the Harry P books are actually lovely with a brilliant sentiment. What an idiot she must be.

I’ve just looked up the story and the fan fiction and I’m far angrier now!!! “lead children astray” – what does she think is in the Harry Potter books?!! Love, kindness, humanity, friendship – THAT’S what’s in the HP books!! She’s stupid.

I’m reading the fan fiction now……….making me even angrier! She’s re-written the characters as different personalities, Harry sounds like a right wimp. J.K Rowling needs to file a lawsuit!!!

I know!! I mean I know his name IS Ronald but writing it in the context of the story as Ronald is not right! LIke you say, only Mrs Weasley and Hermione have that honour. (fans will understand though surely?)
