Anyone want to guess how well this’ll work?

Oh no, call the authorities!

This is something that sounds a little weird to me. Germany has just updated a law that makes it a crime to buy erotic-type eBooks during the day. Seriously.

So no Grey for you this week. I’m obviously not familiar with the law over there, but they might as well say that people can’t watch rated R movies during the day or (cover your eyes, little people) watch porn or anything they want. Who knows, maybe that’s already the case. I just think it’s a little ridiculous to force people to buy these types of eBooks between 10:00 at night and 6:00 in the morning. I haven’t seen anything about printed books, but maybe there’s some age restriction on these types of books over there? I have no idea. But I do know that anyone can walk into their local bookstore and buy any book…

9780553418606_p0_v2_s300x I received this ebook from NetGalley and Crown Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

 Synopsis ~ Carolyn’s not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold spandex bicycle shorts. After all, she was once an American herself. Of course, that was a long time ago, and since then Carolyn hasn’t had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father’s ancient customs. They’ve studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. The experience has left them at times wondering if their cruel leader might actually be God.

Now Father is missing–perhaps even dead–and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded for the first time. Whoever gains control over it will also have control over all of creation.

Carolyn will need every tool at her disposal for the coming battle, as fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own.

Reading The Library at Mount Char is an experience quite unlike any other. If you had Neil Gaiman and Stephen King, got them drunk/high and then asked them to write a story together, they might come up with something like this.

I just finished this book and it’s still going to be difficult to pull together a coherent review, but here it goes.

When I first saw this offered on NetGalley I thought it looked like just my cup of tea. A mystical Library with twelve mysterious librarians? I think I was picturing some of my favorite heroes like:

giphy

or

Noah-Wyle

or

giphy-2

and of course

giphy-1

But no. Carolyn and her siblings aren’t the type of librarians you ever want to meet unless you have a hankering for a horrifying painful and gruesome death. Each of them start out as perfectly ordinary children who live in the same development, but when a mysterious cataclysmic event kills all of their parents, they’re “adopted” by Adam Black, aka Father, who brings to mind some of the worst cult leaders in history. Actually, he could give them lessons in perversion and cruelty. Over the next several years, each child is assigned a catalog to learn. David’s is the catalog of murder techniques, Jennifer’s healing and medicine, Michael’s the language of animals, and so on. Carolyn’s is languages, and she becomes proficient in not just all the known languages of the world, but also those of animals, nature, and myth and legend. Out of all the many rules they are taught the biggest one is that they are not to learn any catalog but their own for that would give them too much power. When Father goes missing, the”children”, who are now adults, are forced out of the Library and decide to go find him. The problem is many of them have their own hidden agendas, including Carolyn, and they don’t exactly play well with each other. With the prize being control over the Library and all of creation itself, it’s hard to guess who will come out the winner.

Carolyn, as the protagonist, isn’t the most likeable character. Despite her obvious emotional scarring at the hands of Father, her callousness and indifference toward those around her make it difficult to feel any real sympathy for her. This is a woman for who the term”collateral damage” is a personal mantra. Even at the end of the book when it’s divulged exactly what happened that fateful day when she and the others lost their parents, I still didn’t care for her. That said, she’s incredibly complex and the way she’s written is unforgettable. She’s the type of character who stays stuck in your head long after you’ve finished the story. I think the only characters I liked unequivocally were Michael, who reminded me of Brendan Frasier’s Tarzan and was sweet in a disturbing sort of way, and Steve, a reformed burgler who finds his life upended after meeting Carolyn. There’s also Erwin, a war hero, now government agent who has a truly unique perspective on life and people.

The book contains many horrifying scenes including some involving animals which made it difficult to read at times. They’re not thrown in gratuitously though and they’re integral to the plot. Thankfully, these are tempered by humorous moments which had me laughing out loud.The first 50 or so pages begin slowly, but after that the pacing continuously picked up and I had a difficult time putting this down. The main reason why I’m only giving this 4 stars is because Scott Hawkins literally throws just about everything but the kitchen sink into his concoction, and because of this, I found myself having to go back and re-read previous passages, and even at the end I was still left feeling confused about a few things. This is such a unique and imaginative novel though, I know at some point I’ll read it again. If you’re a fan of Stephen King, Joe Hill, Neil Gaiman, or Clive Barker, I highly recommend this. It’s not something you’ll soon forget!

9780991531905_p0_v1_s300x I received this ebook from NetGalley and Antebellum Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

~ Letum Wood is a forest of fog and deadfall, home to the quietly famous Miss Mabel’s School for Girls, a place where young witches learn the art of magic.

Sixteen-year-old Biance Monroe has inherited a deadly curse. Determined to break free before it kills her, she enrolls in the respected school to confront the cunning witch who cast the curse: Miss Mabel.

Bianca finds herself faced with dark magic she didn’t expect, with lessons more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. Will Bianca have the courage to save herself from the curse, or will Mabel’s sinister plan be to powerful?

It’s always a good sign when you wind up reading a book in one sitting, which is what I did with Miss Mabel’s School For Girls. This first book introduces young Bianca who has been secretly training with her father to defeat Miss Mabel. The curse has affected her beloved grandmother, and mother, and now, unless Bianca is successful in her quest, she will lose her life when she turns seventeen. So, while her fellow students are there to learn the magic that will help them find their proper place in society, Bianca is there solely to get close to Miss Mabel. Once she’s at the school, what unfolds is reminiscent of The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, but Katie Cross gives these elements a neat twist, so the similarities didn’t bother me.

Bianca is a kick-ass heroine who had me rooting for her from the very first page. While she’s focused on her mission, she also is cognizant of her friends struggles, and tries to be as supportive as she can. She also has a snarky sense of humor and some of her observations had me laughing out loud. Camille and Leda are the two steadfastly loyal best friends, and while they’re not terribly original, there’s some tidbits thrown in regarding their backstories which left me intrigued, particularly Leda’s. Hopefully their characters will be more fully developed as the series develops. Also interesting is Bianca’s father, who really doesn’t make an appearance until the end of the book, yet still is a strong presence throughout the book.

And then there’s Miss Mabel. All I can say is she is a truly nasty piece of work! If you combined Dolores Umbridge, with Voldemort, and President Snow than you might come up with this evil witch. Some of my favorite scenes were the ones with her and Bianca having a battle of wits. What I really liked though, is that just when you think you know her endgame, you discover she has more surprises in store.

Needless to say this is a fast-paced story culminating in a thrilling conclusion. The worldbuilding is phenomenal and never takes away from the action which can sometimes happen. I’m excitedly anticipating reading the other books in this series.

While it’s difficult to make any sense of the massacre at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston S.C, I think this beautiful quote bears repeating:

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than it’s opposite.”

9780446553933_p0_v2_s300x  I received this ebook from NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

~ It seems as though Beecher White has a perfectly ordinary job working for the National Archives in Washington D.C. He has a much more secretive role however, that only a few know about. Beecher is a member of the Culper Ring, a 200-year old spy organization founded by none other than George Washington. One of their main functions is to protect the Presidency at all costs. When the First Lady stumbles across a buried severed arm, the President and his team turn to Beecher for help. It’s soon evident though that the arm and it’s enclosed message isn’t for the President, but for Beecher himself.

When I first requested this from NetGalley I didn’t realize that it was the 3rd book in a series, but despite some references to events in the previous two books, I was able to follow along.

The action begins immediately with the discovery of the severed arm in a small garden adjacent to the White House. As Beecher begins investigating, he discovers that what ever is going on, it’s tied to the mystery of his father’s death, and a long-held, closely guarded conspiracy. From there, you’re taken through twists and turns involving the President, the FBI, and the military. The story switches back and forth from the present day, to when Beecher’s father was in the military, but I was never left feeling confused. Linking both timelines is the deranged murderer who no one seems to be able to catch.

Beecher is a likeable character who, because of the events which took place in the previous two books, shoulders a lot of responsibility for someone only in his twenties. He’s a little too trusting, but he’s determined to uncover the truth. The problem is, it’s difficult to know who to trust in this thriller, as everyone seems to have their own hidden agendas, from the President, to Beecher’s childhood friend. This makes you root even more for Beecher, as he desperately tries to uncover a conspiracy hidden for over two decades, and protect the people he cares about.

Overall, I found The President’s Shadow to be an exciting, if at times, convoluted mix of history, politics, and good old-fashioned thriller. It’s left me wanting to read the first two books while awaiting the next book in the series.

When things go wrong as they sometimes will;

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill;

When the funds are low, and the debts are high

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;

When care is pressing you down a bit-

Rest if you must, but do not quit.

Success is failure turned inside out;

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;

And you can never tell how close you are

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-

It’s when things go wrong that you must not quit.

9781250020123_p0_v1_s300x I received this ebook from NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paperbacks in exchange for an honest review.

~ With her dark hair and eyes Raye Larsen has never quite fit in with the blond-haired, blue-eyed residents of the Scandinavian town of New Bergin, Wisconsin. She’s also adopted, which makes her even more of an outsider. No one knows about the secret she’s been careful to hide though. Raye can communicate with the deceased and help them move on. When she’s contacted by the spirit of a murder victim, and handsome New Orleans detective Bobby Doucet arrives in town, they wind up investigating together. The more Raye gets involved, the more she starts to realize that this is somehow tied to her past, and it threatens herself and everyone she loves.

Charmed

I know this theme has been done before, but Lori Handeland has managed to put an enjoyable spin on it and set up an intriguing mythology. The book begins in the year 1600 with a husband and wife magically sending their three infant daughters into the future, just as they’re burned at the stake by a witch hunter. Flash foward to the present day: Raye is living in small town New Bergin, trying to fit in as much as she can, which includes hiding her gift. She happens upon a murder scene and is contacted by the victim, but instead of asking for help, the way other spirits have, this one gives Raye a warning. Bobby Doucet arrives in town after he becomes aware of the recent murder. It bears a chilling resemblance to others committed by a serial killer he’s been pursuing. As Raye and Bobby become more involved, and discover who is really behind the murders, they not only find out there’s a direct correlation between the murders and Raye’s origins, but that she’s a target herself.

Both Raye and Bobby are characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Raye is strong, smart and passionate, yet she’s also a bit insecure, because she’s always felt like an outsider. She has a great sense of humor which helps her keep her head, when others would probably be losing it. Bobby is haunted by a tragedy from his past which gives him a vulnerability that stops him from coming on too strong. It’s not love at first sight for these two but their chemistry is excellent, and you wind up rooting for them to get past their differences, and their personal pain so they can be together.

The story is interesting and suspenseful, and I loved the way Lori Handeland wove the historical backstory into the present day events. The only thing I had an issue with were the multiple POVS.  It switches back and forth between Raye’s first person POV, to Bobby’s which is in the third person. I found this to be a little distracting at first, but the plot was so exciting, that after the first few chapters it didn’t really bother me. The ending was a little rushed, but ultimately satisfying and set things up nicely for the next book: Heat of the Moment. I haven’t read a straight paranormal romance for a while, and I’m glad I read this. I’m looking forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy.
