For some reason, every year starting January 2nd, I start feeling down. It goes from the regular post-holiday blues and gets progressively worse.

Seriously. I’m really like this. It’s a wonder that my husband hasn’t divorced me. If I ever doubt he really loves me it’s times like these that remind me how much he does!
So, this afternoon I was reading, listening to some music, and trying not to feel sorry for myself when Rachel Platten’s Fight Song came on. I’ve heard this many times over the past few months, but this was the first time I actually listened. And you know what? I felt better! Isn’t that weird? Being the techno-idiot that I am, I still haven’t figured out how to link to a video on my Kindle or iPad, so I thought I’d share my favorite part of the song. This is for all of you who, like me, need a pick-me-up now and then.
This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I’m alright song
My power’s turned on
Starting right now I’ll be strong
I’ll play my fight song
And I don’t really care if nobody else believes
‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me
Know I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me

This is a difficult time for many of us. Winter is here. Spring is so far off. I’m glad you found inspiration, Kim. Sometimes we need a little help. Sending you a hug from Vermont!

Hi Sue! Isn’t it funny how sometimes it’s something relatively small that pulls us from the abyss? How are you guys doing in Vermont? So far it hasn’t been too bad here in MA, which is a relief after last year! Sending you a ginormous hug! 🙂

We are LOVING this winter. Don’t we deserve all this mild weather after that brutal cold last year? I didn’t mind a green Christmas at all! The holidays are loaded for some- really bad for us every since we lost my mom. So glad to put it behind us. As for you, my dear, that guest post you wrote is still my top one. Almost 500 views! If you get low again, maybe remember writers want to hear what you have to say!
Keep up the good fight! Spring will soon be here!

After last year I think if I ever saw more than a few inches of snow I’d throw up my hands and move to Florida! I’m sorry about your mom Sue. My dad died back in 1982, but I still miss him dreadfully, particularly around the holidays. That’s so incredible about the guest post! I can never seem to get rid of that little voice in the back of my head that insists no one is interested in me or what I have to say, so thank you for telling me, and also for the pep talk!

You got the snow- we got the bitter mind boggling cold. My hubbie and I swore we’d never go through another winter like that one. Hey, if we do, we will look you up in Florida! Parents are so tough to lose. My dad’s 85 and facing surgery next week. Holding my breath right now, that everything goes well.
You should know you have so much to say! I’d love to host you again soon!
Keep your chin up, butter cup (an expression a dear friend uses. It always cracks me up!)

Would you believe we got both?! We had pipes breaking everywhere. I’ve lived here my entire life and I don’t remember a winter that bad. Doesn’t Florida sound lovely? I hope your dad’s okay. I’ll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks again Sue.
Hugs!

Argh! Insult to injury! Florida. White beaches. Tropical waters… Wait just a sec, I gotta wipe the drool. Maybe next winter I’ll head south for some sunshine, and maybe you can meet me there!
Thanks for the prayers. We will know more in Monday.
Hugs right back!

You will be okay. January just has to end. January, literally, is the worst month of the year. It’s supposed to be the New year and you look outside to the cold, the lack of life, the grayish blue haze, everyone is taking down their lights. How can you not sink into the doldrums. Fabulous Phantom Tollbooth reference by the way.

I sympathize. February is the month when my spirit finally breaks, and my mood settles in to match the constant grey gloom outside. Even Sumo turns glum, and basically everything makes *him* happy. I try to compensate by celebrating every possible holiday I can get my hands on, and fortunately February has quite a few. Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day, Mardi Gras, President’s day, Chinese New Year…anything to pep up the doldrums. Considering the mild weather we’ve had (it was 60F today!!), perhaps I can dodge the dreary bullet this year. Fingers crossed for us both!

Thanks Rachel. I’m sorry you and little Sumo have a tough time too. I do the same thing with celebrating all the February holidays.plus it’s by birthday on the 3rd, so yay! It’s supposed to be in the 50s here for the next few days so I’m happier already. I hope you and Sumo have a cheery February!

Have I mentioned how sweet you are? I will Vinnie. I’m feeling better. It’s going to be in the 50s here through mid-week, so that’s definitely a mood lifter. Plus I like February. Lot’s of holidays and my birthday. Plus, once you get to the end Spring is right around the corner! 🙂

I agree with Steph. I know that if I get through January it’s close enough to spring that I can survive it. I don’t get true winter doldrums but start to get very antsy about being stuck inside. Plus I tend to lose all my energy when there is so little daylight.
Spring will be here soon, Kim! And then I will complain about how hot it is here. 😜

Hugs!! Here’s hoping your winter blues slip away soon and that the weather starts improving back there! Being originally from California I never understood the winter blues till I moved to Indiana in my 20s for a few years. Weeks with no sun and dismal weather had me sobbing my eyes out all winter long, it’s just awful. But now we’re in Tahoe and even though we get hundreds of inches of snow, winter is easier because there’s lots of sunshine between the storms and it’s so high up you feel the sun searing into your skin which is smile inducing, it’s a nice place if you love lots of warm sunshine and snow. It’s a fun place.to move to.😉 So I’ll be thinking tons of happy, sunny, warm thoughts for you and hoping winter fades quickly back there! And this song is fabulous! It’s fun to sing it at the top of your lungs, there’s just something cathartic about it.

Thanks Jen! They’re already starting to slip away. I think the warmer weather that’s here to stay for the next few days will definitely help. I’ve always wanted to visit Lake Tahoe. It sounds so lovely! 🙂

YAY! I’m soo glad that it’s improving! It is truly gorgeous here and there’s so much to do all through winter and summer. I have a huge list of things I still want to do and it always grows lol While I adore the winter here (we just spent the afternoon sledding on our driveway haha), I especially love the summers…..I can’t wait for our weekly beach playdates to begin. Spring/Summer is so close yet so far away. 😉

Oh Kim, don’t worry January is over. In Kenya we have a slang word for January, Njaanuary. Basically, Njaa which is hunger in Swahili + January. Its to show how broke, sad and depressing January is. I think I have threatened to quit my job at least 4 times this month alone from depression of this stupid month and am actually a January baby.
Loving the fight song, should be a theme song for the month to bolster spirits!

Happy Belated Birthday Cici!🎂 Did you do anything special? I’m sorry you have a rough time too. That’s so interesting about Njaanuary. I think it perfectly captures this depressing month. But it’s February now! Less than two months until Spring!💐🌸🌹🌺🙋🏻

Thank You 😀 No I didn’t do anything but I did eat cake for three days straight. SO YAY!
Hehehe, in Kenya we never even realize the seasons changing guess its the benefits of leaving near the equator. Its always hot or raining.

Ah lady, I hope that you feel better. I think a lot of people get it. I get to a week or two in a year where I am inexplicably feeling down. You will survive it, and your husband loves you, flat month or no 🙂
