Release Date: August 18th, 2016
Synopsis: Emerson Knight is introverted, eccentric, and has little to no sense of etiquette. Good thing he’s also brilliant, rich, and ( some people might say) handsome, or he’d probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with mega-bank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.
What starts off as an inquiry about missing bank funds in the Knight account, leads to inquiries about a missing man, missing gold, and a life-and-death race across the country. Through the streets of Washington, D.C., and down into the underground vault of the Federal Reserve in New York City, an evil plan is exposed. A plan so sinister that only a megalomaniac could think it up, and only the unlikely duo of the irresistibly charming Emerson Knight and the tenacious Riley Moon can stop it.
I have a confession to make. Up until now I have never read a Janet Evanovich book. I know! I know! This must be pretty shocking to all you diehard mystery lovers out there. I really have no excuse except for lack of time. Well, now that I’ve read Curious Minds, I’m making it a priority to catch up on her previous books/series. I’ve got to say I haven’t read a book that made me laugh so much in a long time. Riley and Emerson are my new favorite fictional couple. Emerson is a bit like a modern day Sherlock, with loads of quirks and idiosyncrasies. Beyond being gorgeous, he’s also endearing. I mean, how can you not love a guy who has zebras (among other wildlife) roaming his estate? Riley is sassy and fierce and is desperately trying to make sense of the unbelievable turn her previously staid life has taken. The dialogue between her and Emerson is hysterically funny, and their chemistry is smoking. Here’s an example of a typical exchange between them:
“Would I get paid?”
“Is that important to you?”
“Yes.”
“Would you like a zebra?” Emerson asked her.
“No. I’d like money.”
Although there isn’t any actual romance between them, you can tell it’s just a matter of time. The secondary characters are equally colorful and range from Emerson’s aunt who has no trouble taking down the bad guys to a psychotic villain who just won’t stay dead. This is a fast-paced mystery with loads of action, and surprising twists. While the plot is a bit implausible, it’s just so much fun that it’s quite easy to suspend disbelief. Curious Minds is a delightful read and I can’t wait for book 2 in the series. This is written by two authors, but I’d be hard pressed to say where one began and the other ended. Their writing is smooth and completely seamless. It’s a perfect beach read and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves mysteries with quirky storylines and colorful characters.
