This isn’t one of my usual bookish posts, but I felt the need to share. We have a lot of wildlife where we live and it’s not uncommon to see raccoons, rabbits, groundhogs, wild turkeys, and even the occasional deer. My husband and I have been having a bit of a problem with the raccoons getting into our trash. They really are quite dexterous with their little hands and are quite adept at prying off the covers.
As we opened the front door this morning there was our trash barrel, on it’s side with the contents strewn all over are yard and stairs. One of the things they got into was a sealed container of store bought cupcakes of which my husband had tried one and found them too disgusting to eat. Needless to say they ate all of them. Also in the trash were the remains of a tomato which apparently did not meet with their approval. Really?! Unlike the grape loving critter above, our raccoons are junk food addicts! We’re now going to try storing the barrels in the garage, although I swear I wouldn’t be surprised if our ravenous raccoons figured out how to open the the door!

I actually like these little slices of daily life people post online. It helps me feel like my life isn’t quite so odd.
We have raccoons in the inner city, too, the little buggers. Just this summer, my brother got into a neighborhood battle with the local raccoons who kept trying to inhabit the tree in his front yard. It was hilarious with him trying to come up with various ways of keeping them out of the hole in the trees roots, while trying not to kill the tree, or the raccoons.
Earlier this year, he got int a fight with a squirrel that had taken up residence in his roof/ceiling of his house. He accidentally trapped her baby in the eaves and she spent the next 48 hours clawing her way back into the house to rescue it.
In fact, since we live near a large public park system we get all “teh wile-life” we cannot handle, since we’re city people and have no idea what to do when wildlife takes an interest in our lives. Possums, raccoons, falcons, mega-crows, deer, lots and lots of skunks (they are everywhere, and every now and then you run across someone in public, who smells very strongly of a run in with the little critters), and a groundhog who lives across the street.

Oh God! I’m sorry, but that’s so funny about your brother! I can just picture it’s!😄 I forgot to mention skunks. I haven’t personally seen one, but I’ve definitely smelled them! We have a fenced in yard and a few years ago a stag got trapped in it. The poor thing couldn’t figure out how to get out. We called the animal control officer and instead our police department sent up a patrol officer who came up with the brilliant plan of firing his gun off in the air to scare him into jumping the fence. Instead, the deer got his antlers stuck in the chain link part of it. He finally freed himself and made a successful leap. My sister-and-law and I walked down the street as he went from backyard to backyard. I’m glad we did because you wouldn’t believe the number of hunters who came up asking if we saw the deer. We kept pointing them in the wrong direction!

Haha! Raccoons sure are smart and sneaky critters! I remember a lady I used to work with telling a story once about finding a raccoon in her washing machine and freaking out (she’s not much of animal person). She had to call the police or animal control to come get it. They found it rather funny.

Raccoons are (cute) bastards… LOL (Says the former wildlife rehabber of raccoon babies!). It’s baby (juvenile, now,,in US) season now…so they will really be active …

Ok, I have to admit I’m an animal lover and I just toss the scraps out back to feed our critters. I’ve had the occasional coon get impatient and actually come tap on the back door….yes, I have them spoiled. But on a side note they never mess with the trash when we put it out. LOL

I do the same thing Carrie, but our raccoons are so spoiled, they want more!

I often wonder how the heck critters so small can eat so much. Now the squirrels I think take off and try to “store” it for later but the coons just munch away. LOL

I love raccoons, lol, I voraciously hunt down all gifs, pics and youtube videos of these adorable critters. But I do acknowledge they are a pest and it would be super frustrating to have them loitering around on your property. It’s just…they’re so darn cute. ❤ But I hope they stop scavenging through your rubbish and making a mess!

I enjoy when people shake things up a bit. I try my best to do it myself.

Oh most definitely is. I mean when I look back at how my site was originally and how it is now, without shaking up stuff it wouldn’t be as enjoyable.

I couldn’t help picturing the raccoons in The Great Outdoors movie from the 80s, lol!! I’m SORRY! I’m sure the mess was beyond awful to clean up, and they’re such smart little creatures that they somehow figured out how to get into my Aunt and Uncle’s garage. BUT here’s hoping yours can’t, and you don’t have to clean up a huge mess thanks to them ever again!

I have to admit, they are funny. So far they haven’t figured out how to open the garage door, so fingers crossed!😐

That must be so irritating, but I have to admit I’m kind of envious of it. We live in Los Angeles so wildlife is nonexistent.

“Also in the trash were the remains of a tomato which apparently did not meet with their approval.” – More laughing for me! And these pics and gifs xD
I love posts from bloggers that are a little about them, away from just books/movies/series/whatever they specialise in.
We do not have raccoons out here, but we have mongoose that go for the trash sometimes, and the monkeys here that are just totally outrageous at times.

Thanks Zoe! I like mongooses and monkeys, although we don’t have them here. I probably wouldn’t lime them so much in the trash though!😕
