From the cab stepped a tall old man. Black raincoat and hat and battered valise. He paid the driver, then turned and stood motionless, staring at the house. The cab pulled away and rounded the cornet of Thirty-sixty Street. Kinderman quickly pulled out to follow. As he turned the corner, he noticed that the tall old man hadn’t moved but was standing under the streetlight glow, in mist, like a melancholy traveler frozen in time.
William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist
I guess something had to happen on Friday the 13th 😦 I never read The Exorcist, and only saw the movie for the first time a couple of years ago. It was a little creepy, but I don’t think it scared me as much as it did some people.

Huh! That didn’t occur to me until you said it Jeanne! I think you’d like the book. I remember him sitting for an interview and saying he never saw it as a horror novel. For him it was more like a supernatural police procedural. I read it when I was 14 years old and was completely spooked. It’s so detailed and descriptive that I was immediately sucked right into it. It has that slow simmering tension and suspense that gives you goosebumps, you know? And then knowing it’s based on a supposedly true story, well that just gives it an extra thrill of terror!

Hm. I just may have to give the book a try sometime, then.

A great book and film.
Somehow suitable that he should have died on a Friday the 13th.
Best wishes, Pete.

Kelly just informed me he died Thursday but it didn’t get out until yesterday. Maybe he was determined not to go out on the 13th, just as he never saw himself as a horror writer.🤔

He died on the 12th; we just found out on the 13th. 🙂 He was determined to avoid cliches til the end, I guess. 😉
So I agree about The Exorcist (movie and book), but did you see The Exorcist 3? It’s based on another of his books (Legion) but he also directed it. It’s really good.

Ahh. Thanks for the info Kelly. I did read Legion and saw the movie. I liked both, but not quite as much as the original.💁🏻

I never read the book, but from what I’ve heard he was an amazing author. It’s sad when someone with a lot of talent leaves us.

I have to admit, I have had the title on my shelf for years. Of course I have seen the film, so I know the story, but I have yet to commit to the book. It seems daunting every time I pick it up. I should really make an effort this year.

You know, it is one of those things where I just know I will, but that paperback looks so big haha. Also with my eyesight of late, I think I will try to get in on Kindle before tackling. The print is atrociously small on my copy :p

Can’t say I loved the book or the movie but the man had a way with words and I remember the book quite well, a testament to his talent.

I read both The Exorcist and Stephen King’s Carrie within weeks of each other and I think they’re what kicked off my lifelong love of horror.
