This is a great post by Ed. I don’t think anyone can deny that Dreamers shouldn’t be punished for something that was out of their control. Dreamers have added to the rich tapestry that makes up our country which makes the rescission of DACA even more heartbreaking.
What I do not understand about the DACA debate.

As I listen to the talking heads on television, voices on the radio and stories in the print media I hear about the undocumented alien, children who only know the US and the rule of law, and a whole bunch of other “stuff” that the utter seems to think applied and makes sense. This is not to mention the assertion that if we can’t control our borders . . .
The people in the DACA program were brought here illegally as children by their parents. They were in fact kidnapped from their native countries, even it if was for a good reason. DACA participants are victims of a crime—they are kidnap victims. Unlike kidnap victims in domestic kidnapping cases, they have no family that we can return them…

I was planning on writing a post addressing the recision of DACA, but this stubborn migraine got in the way. I love what Ed said. Dreamers are the innocent victims who are being used as political pawns.

I admit to being conflicted on this topic. Not that I trust the man with the hair, heaven forbid, but he *seems* to be wanting Congress to do this the right way, by law rather than executive decision, and is giving them ample time to do so if they can control their usual nonsense. Unlike his previous executive orders, I get the feeling this is one time he isn’t necessarily opposed to the program, just the way it was done (and because Obama did it). If Congress gets their act together, the program will be resurrected, won’t it? What am I missing? Please, somebody, set me straight!

So, here’s part of the problem as I see it Lelia. Since the Clinton administration, Congress has been unable to come to a consensus regarding protection for children brought into the country illegally. This is why Obama enacted DACA in 2009. There is no reason to think that there will be anything new this time around. Six months may sound like plenty of time, but remember what happened with healthcare. Plus, Congress has a host of other things they’re going to be fighting over like tax reform, and the debt ceiling. If nothing is done, in March, the first deportations of Dreamers will be implemented. In my humble opinion, this goes against EVERYTHING that America stands for!

I don’t disagree with you at all but I think it’s way past time we allowed Congress to behave the way we do and they need to be held as accountable as the president. Yes, he’s wrong but I think it’s pretty clear he’ll support a new program. Yes, six months is a short time but we know they can do it if the will is there.
On the other hand, today’s lawsuit will probably put a hold on this anyway, at least for a while. I guess my confliction comes from the feeling that this is the first time I’ve thought his intent is not 100% evil.

I understand what you’re saying Lelia. While I don’t think what he’s done is inherently evil, I do believe it’s cowardly, self-serving and the epitome of passing the buck. As Candidate Trump, he promised that one of his first acts as President would be to abolish DACA. As President, he’s dithered for months, and basically has put Dreamers through a horrifying reality show. Will he or won’t he? He has “heart” for Dreamers. So many mixed signals. Take even this decision of his. First, it was going to be released on Friday. Then the administration decided it wouldn’t be until Tuesday. And then, instead of owning his decision, Trump sends Sessions out to make the announcement. Sessions, a racist and bigot who couldn’t contain his glee. And if this isn’t bad enough, Trump sends out that stupid tweet last night saying he’ll “revisit” the issue if Congress fails to act. Seriously? What the heck is he going to do after throwing this in the lap of Congress? Go back on his decision? Not likely. No, he’ll sit back, blame the Democrats and watch as almost 800,000 people are forcibly forced out of the only country they’ve ever know. But that’ll be okay, because Trump can rest secure that he will maintain the support of his base.
These are people who trusted the government, and turned over all their personal information. Information that will now be used against them. They’re despicably being used as political pawns in a game of one-upmanship.
I apologize for the rant. Obviously ths is something I feel passionately about so I hope you’ll forgive me. Let’s pray that Congress actually does the right thing.

Oh, my goodness, you aren’t ranting! What he’s done is awful and, yes, cowardly, but I do think we haven’t heard the last of the program quite yet. Silly of me, but I prefer to believe that all hope isn’t gone and people like you with strong convictions and a voice can help put pressure on Congress which NEEDS to stand up and do what’s right, not to mention exercising their duty to place checks on the president. So, you keep right on 😉

Aww. Thank you Lelia. I really didn’t want to offend you or have you think I didn’t understand where you were coming from! Phew!🤗
I definitely haven’t given up hope. There are at least a couple of bills that are already waiting in the wings, including the DREAM Act, which is being sponsored by Democratic Senator Richard Durbin, and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. I think one thing that almost everyone agrees on is that it’s unacceptable for Dreamers to continue living with the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads. While I live in MA and all my Congressional representatives are Democrats, I emailed all of them, and if need be I’ll follow-up with phone calls. This issue cannot be handled as politics as usual, by either side!
