The Irish rock band, the Cranberries, have been one of my favorite groups since the early 1990s. I remember being captivated by both the music and the lyrics of their songs, like Linger, Dreams, Ode to My Family, and especially Zombie from their sophomore album No Need to Argue (1994). Inspired by the IRA bombing in Warrington, Cheshire, England where two children, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, were killed, it was controversial, with some critics saying it trivialized the Troubles. It definitely made an impact on me, as I still know the lyrics by heart today.
Zombie
Another head hangs lowly
Child slowly taken
And the violence, caused such silence
Who are we mistaken?
~
But you see, it’s not me
It’s not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying
~
In your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie, oh
What’s in your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie-oh
~
Du, du, du, du
Du, du, du, du
Du, du, du, du
Du, du, du, du
~
Another mother’s breaking
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken
~
It’s the same old theme
Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they’re still fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dying
~
In your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What’s in your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie

I still cant wrap my head around this……my heart is hurting. I saw them live at a David Letterman show, she was awesome. She had on a red satin dress and when she opened her mouth it was like an angel singing……. I’ll never forget that day……..

This is just such sad news. The Cranberries were one of the first indie bands that I got into as a teenager. She was far, far too young to die.

So sad. I remember getting absolutely blown away by her singing Zombie on SNL back when I was a kid (the internet tells me this was 1995 which would have made me 13). Wow…that was 23 years ago! Also fondly remember watching a bunch of Cranberries music videos while resting in a Beijing hotel room a few years after that. Know what I’m listening to tonight.

I’m so sad about this. She had such a unique voice and really changed what “rock” music is perceived to be. From what I have read she had quite a tortured past, so I hope she is at peace now.

Im proudly from Warrington and Zombie always gives me goosebumps. It is inredible that somebody from a different country managed to capture the feeling the town has on that terrible terrible day. She will be sadly missed by everybody who come together yearly to remember those two poor boys.
