Synopsis: Some dangers you cannot outrun. Some nightmares do not end when you wake.
Something is watching Katherine Harris. She can feel it when she goes out. She can feel it inside her home. She feels it in her bed. Her husband, Alex, wants to blame her anxiety on her pregnancy, but he’s often away for work. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be stuck in a small town, to be trapped in a tiny house on a run-down street, to be alone. Kate does, and the feeling only grows worse.
Whatever is going on, Kat’s certain that it’s far more serious than pregnancy jitters. When Alex takes Kat on a second honeymoon to get her mind off things, it becomes far more dangerous as well.
Holy guacamole this was an insanely stressful read! Of course I mean that in the best possible way. First though, I need to give out a warning to animal lovers like me who get wigged out when a cute pet dies in a book. There is a scene here involving a sweet dog. However, you can see it coming and skim over it, which is what I did.
I was immediately hooked by the eerie prologue which immediately put me off balance, where I stayed for the majority of the book. The characters of Kat and her husband Alex are well-rounded and extremely relatable ones. They will probably even remind you of some that you know in real life. As these horrifying supernatural events start happening to the isolated Kat, my heart ached for her. I could literally feel the chilling menace surrounding her as well as her growing helplessness in the face of this unknown danger. And I also felt for Alex who loves and is completely devoted to Kat, yet doesn’t know what to do to help her.
The plot takes an even more terrifying turn when Alex decides to take Kat back to where they spent their honeymoon—which unfortunately happens to be a cabin in the woods. I know what you’re thinking. One of the things you should always not do when dealing with unexplained creepy events, is to go on vacation to an isolated cabin. But this just ratchets up the tension even more. By this point, I had no idea what was going on. Were there really supernatural events happening or was Kat suffering from some pregnancy-induced psychosis? Well, I’m not telling! The only thing I’ll share is that when the big reveal comes, it’s shockingly brilliant and I never saw it coming.
Cleaving Souls is the second horror book (after Rafael Chandler’s Mask Beneath Her Face), that I’ve read in the last few weeks that I unhesitatingly put up in the same category as Stephen King. This isn’t just some gore fest, although it has some “ew” moments. This is the type of story that completely messes with your head and stays there days after you’ve finished it. It’s a pulse-pounding thrill ride that I guarantee will keep you up into the wee hours of the morning reading. And once you’ve finished, good luck going to sleep! I highly recommend Cleaving Souls to fans of Stephen King and Dean Koontz’s early horror novels. It’s a quick read that you won’t regret picking up.

Biography: Chauncey Rogers was born in Arizona, and since then has hopped back and forth between the mid-western and western United States. He married in 2012 while attending school in Utah. His favorite movie since he was three is Jurassic Park, and he Wishes very badly that Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster were real, though he doesn’t believe in them as much as he used to.
I used to read all the early Koontz novels. I might like this one, Kim.
Best wishes, Pete.

The cover is awesome, and the synopsis is seriously tempting. I did like Koontz’ earlier works as well. Great review!

Thank you! I’m really glad with how this cover turned out. I do my own covers (for better or worse) and this one took quite a bit of work before I got here. My initial idea was to do a television screen with a sinister reflection in it–quite different from the final product!

Oh yes! That is quite the change!

It is! 😛 It takes a while to find something that feels right for the story. I did a cover reveal for my next novel just the other day, but…. Well, I’m actually reworking that cover, too. I think I jumped the gun!

The cover is what originally caught my eye Chauncey when I saw this reviewed on Dani’s blog.😊

Just another reason for me to be glad that I didn’t settle on any of the earlier cover art ideas!

I am a huge fan of early Dean Koontz (… Sadly, not so much in the later years…) and I just started to get into Chauncey Rogers books through his blog, and others. Can’t wait to pair one of them with a nice cocktail! 💓

Oh and I don’t think I mentioned it on my review but I had post partum psychosis with two of my children and the way you depicted the character’s emotions was fantastic! It made me so crazy to find out what was going on and was super shocked with the outcome! I will have to do another post, interview or book feature for this book if that’s okay with you!😍📚
LikeLiked by 2 people
That’s perfectly fine with me!
It is funny you should mention the post-partum psychosis (not that there’s anything funny about that happening to someone), because someone I knew who was having a really rough pregnancy thought I might have been basing Kat’s situation off of them–but I didn’t even know they were having a hard time with their pregnancy! My wife had pretty easy pregnancies; I just based Kat off of that, and threw in a couple of heaping tablespoons of crazy. 😛

Pfff….I could feel the suspense just by reading your review for this Kim….it sounds like a really amazing and terrific read. I plan on doing a lot of reading in April, and will at least try to read a few of the recommendations I have had from all of you in the past few months. This sounds, very, very good…and you ranking it along the same lines as Stephen King is high praise indeed. Wonderful review Kim! 😊😂

Oh… BTW, I’m reading Swan Song right now and that book has totally blown my mind!
I feel silly asking this, but have you read Robert McCammon’s books? This is my second (after Boy’s Life) and I already adore him (even more than SK!!)
LikeLiked by 2 people
I loved Boy’s Life and Swan Song. Also, his historical thriller Matthew Corbett series that he writes with Vincent Chong. Then there’s The Wolf’s Hour, They Thirst, Gone South, Speaks the Nightbird and Queen of Bedlam…I’d better stop now!

Oh, Kim… this is why I was feeling Silly asking you about it… Lol.
I’m so glad you mentioned the others because now I know which ones to read next. I was really interested in Wolf’s Hour as the title itself sounds so good!
I recently learned that McCain turned to writing history (a genre I’ve never really explored) so I wasn’t sure about reading those, but if it’s a thriller, then I’ll check them out.
What do you think about The Night Boat? I loved the cover and the description and was very intrigued by the blurb!

I actually haven’t read The Night Boat yet so if you read it Heena, I’d love to know what you think.🤗

A lot of reviewers didn’t like that one, but I am a sucker for sea-settings in creey books, so I will definitely let you know in case if I read it.
As always it is such an absolute delight to talk about books with you, Kim. I’ve missed having these conversations!
Hugs!

Not to butt in on this conversation, but Swan Song is one of my absolute favorites! I listened to that one about four years ago, and haven’t stopped recommending it to people.
The only other McCammon books I’ve read were the first three of the Corbett series. I enjoyed them, but apparently not enough to continue in the series. 😛 I’ve thought a lot about picking up Boy’s Life, though.

Swan Song is definitely one of his classics. I think you might like Boy’s Life as well Chauncey.😊

Yeah… Swan Song is pretty good, though I loved Boy’s life better (I guess maybe it’s because it was my first book by him.) Kim’s right… DO READ Boy’s Life… it’s an absolute gem!!

I’ll have to give it a try, I suppose! It seems like most McCammon fans really enjoyed it, and it’s been a little while since I picked up something by him. 🙂

Definitely! Being a picky reader I had never come across a book that I read twice, right after I finished the book, just to be able to experience the story and the writing again… until I read The Boy’s Life.
If you do read it in near future, do share your afterthoughts 🙂
BTW, it was great to have met you (ummm…conversed with you?) 🙂
And I just realized you’re the author of Cleaving Souls… sorry for not having realized it earlier. I’m a book reviewer (among other things) so in case if your book is still available for reviewing do let me know the right person to get in touch with to request a copy.

That’s very high praise for any book! I might get it on audible once its warm enough to work in my garden again. Those menial tasks are prime audiobook time!
It was nice to meet you, too! Since I’m the right person to get in touch with, you’re farther along in the copy-requesting process than you realized! 😉 I’ll drop by your blog and go through your contact page. Thank you! 🙂

I’m a bit late to the party when it comes to audiobooks, but I’m trying to get the hang of them. They are pretty fast and serve great purpose for, as you rightly put it, the menial tasks. 🙂
Thanks for the books! Appreciate it 😀

For me, audiobooks became very habitual very quickly, but it took a long time to start. Glad I did, though. It easily doubled the reading I get done. 🙂
No problem! Thank you!

Reading does get fast, but I start feeling sleepy as soon as the narrator starts narrating. Lol. I guess my mind instantly starts relating the audiobook to my grandfather telling me bedtime stories in my childhood. If you have any suggestions to avoid this, then do share!

Well, I guess I’m always double-tasking. I’ll usually be cleaning, driving, digging, or drawing. I do an inordinate amount of digging. 😛

Horror is not a genre that I read often but your review has definitely tempted me. I really like the sound of the mystery, not knowing whether or not the creepy events are real. This sounds like a great read and I am glad to see that you enjoyed it.
