I have no doubt that many of you have already heard about the horrific massacre at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Ironically the city was named as Florida’s safest, just last year. Right now the death toll stands at seventeen. The 19-year-old suspect is a former student who had been expelled for “disciplinary reasons.” Naturally there’s not much else known except for the fact that he used an AR-15 -style rifle with multiple magazines, to gun down his victims. He was also known to be “troubled” according to some teachers and students. I’m not going to rant and rave about our inability to enact common sense gun control legislation, because honestly, what’s the point? You know and I know that this latest atrocity will change nothing. Condolences, thoughts, and prayers are already being sent and for the next week or two politicians from both sides of the aisle will pontificate about their views, and then everything will go back to business as usual. To be fair, this isn’t just a gun issue, although I maintain that’s a big part of it. What is happening also involves a breakdown in our mental health system as well. And I’m going to go one step farther and say there’s also a breakdown in our society. I know this is complicated and there aren’t any easy, quick fixes, but it seems to me that we’ve become so tribal that we can’t agree on even the simplest things. And meanwhile, children are dying. Today’s shooting is the 25th fatal shooting event at an elementary, middle or high school including Columbine in 1999. There have been 98 fatalities as a result. It’s 43 days into 2018 and there’s already been 18 school shootings. That’s right. EIGHTEEN! We need to do better. Students shouldn’t have to be afraid to go to school and parents, as they send them off, shouldn’t have to harbor the fear that they may not see their children again. How many more images like the ones below, can we watch before we stop wringing our hands and say in one voice “Enough!” Make no mistake, the countdown clock has already reset and begun ticking down to the next massacre.

My problem is John, is that NOTHING ever changes. No gun control legislation. No extra money or services given to mental health institutions. Trump’s planning on cutting funding for social services and they’re already hurting. My husband said he’s waiting for someone to just walk into a school with explosives and blow it up, perish the thought!😞

Yet more mass carnage in your schools. I’m so sorry. I feel for the families of the victims and the victims themselves. The NRA must shoulder some of the blame for continually fighting any intelligent legislation to make it more difficult for some people to get guns and that some certain weapons like the AR15 (OR STYLE OF)are not necessary on the streets of America. The guns can’t be used for hunting.
It’s the mid term elections in November, I suggest you push each candidate on gun control issues and get a written promise they’ll vote for gun control or they won’t get your vote.
The NRA must be in the pay of weapons manufacturers to be so anti any changes and they in turn could make sure assault weapons are only sold to the military but sales are more important than lives. This year you must prove them wrong.
Huge Hugs

Thanks David. I agree that the only way to institute change is to vote in politicians who won’t bow down to the NRA. I’m hoping the organizations attention will be somewhat diverted by the developing story about their own ties to Russia. I’m not for banning all guns and neither are most Americans, but c’mon. Granted, as of right now we have no idea how or where he got his hands on weapons, but it just seems that it’s way too easy for anyone to buy an assault weapon.

I saw this yesterday evening over on Dani’s blog. It was literally the last post I read before going to sleep. Needless to say this is all so senseless and very sad. One can never look in the mind of others, but I can honestly say that for all those years that I have been bullied I might have had thoughts of revenge, but never ever were there any thoughts whatsoever of causing harm to innocent people. But whatever the cause for this is, it’s exactly what you say here…the clock has already been reset, and now we are waiting for the next one. And if that isn’t a depressing thought, I don’t know what is 😢

Remember when this last happened, Kim, I said that tou could almost cut and paste the tribute, ready for the next one? Just change the names and location, and the numbers killed…
Here we are again, someone with a grudge, and access to weapons and ammunition. It is a ‘gun issue’, in my opinion. He could never have caused so many deaths or casualties armed with a knife, or baseball bat. Unless the people in your country are prepared to accept severely restricting gun laws, then it is just a case of waiting until the next one.
We know the answer to that though.
Best wishes, Pete.

I realized that after Sandy Hook. It’s also a mental health issue. There are just so many people falling through the cracks, yet more and more programs are losing money or being defunded all together.

I don’t understand the paranoia Casey. My dad was a gun collector and my sister and I grew up being taught to have a healthy respect for them. But honestly! Why is there a need for an ordinary citizen to own something like an AR-15? And why did Mr. Trump pass a bill last February that overturned one from President Obama that made it more difficult to for someone who is mentally ill to purchase a gun. Why is Senator Paul Ryan saying it’s “too soon” to be talking about gun control? Just…WHY?😰😰😰

This is so traumatizing! I hope you are hanging in there, Kim! This has my heart into pieces and considering homeschool! Sadly you are right that this is just another day it seems in America. I hate that this has becoming predictable. This should never become the norm. You are still in my prayers, Book Sister! Also I am praying for all those that have been affected by this tragedy! As being a patient of government mental health care I can tell you there is not enough funds even if you are thinking about hurting yourself you are lucky if you get an appointment with a therapist every two weeks and a doctor every two months. For a new appointment it takes a month. All because they are so low on staff because it is the lowest funded government service. When I was younger I was pushed out of treatment even though I tried to hurt myself because of having no funds and not being able to pay. It really is such a horrible thing to face. There is no help for those that need help also there is no better management of gun control. It’s just a mess. I hope you are hanging in there, Kim. Much love.

I do want tighter gun control and could talk on about that, but there’s also two other huge issues that have changed vastly in the last 30/40+ years and it’s so daunting.
Our mental health system has had a MASSIVE breakdown in the last 40+ years. From the 70s to now, it’s terrifying if you go back and read the history of how things slowly got removed from our healthcare system. People aren’t being taken care of, the way they use to. So many need help that aren’t receiving it. We have someone in our extended step-family who suffers from schizophrenia, who’s had shoot-out situations with cops etc. And the amount of help that’s declined for him, from the 70/80’s vs now is HORRIFIC. I just, this is such a HUGE problem that needs to be fixed. I even see it at the schools, that what they’re doing to help kids with mental issues, it’s not near enough!
And secondly, the differences in the kids in my classes vs my sons classes is terrifying. Both of our schools were/are some of the top in the states but instead of having a few problems for each grade level, now we have multiple in each class. My time spent with them, when I volunteer throughout the week, oh my gosh, I’m told horrifying things about their home lives and we’ve (the volunteers) have had to contact CPS and the police. Multiple, multiple, multiple times. And then when you throw in how you pretty much can’t remove a child from school/district with an IEP (unless they bring a weapon, drugs or cause SERIOUS bodily harm to another)….even though they’re being physically violent on a weekly basis to the other children in their class, the staff and the volunteers and that the schools have to go on lock-downs on a weekly basis, well we’re just all fucked. Plain and simple.
So yes! We need change. Gun control change. Changes in mental health care. And changes in nationwide school polices. And don’t even get me started on changes that need to be taken at home. I have to say I’m extremely grateful for my group of family and friends, and all that we do to help out where we can, but still it’s never enough.

I agree the mental aspect is a huge part of this. Respect and accountability are another. As a person who owns guns…. you’re right. I completely disagree with pushing more gun control but holding the people accountable (in this case – foster parents) who allow access to guns, obtain guns illegally and act irresponsibly with their guns by not obeying the many existing laws should be held responsible. There are plenty of laws. Making new ones will not help until existing ones are enforced.
As someone who enjoys guns. The AR included…. I think someone telling me I can’t have one because we have bad people using them does not solve the issue.

I understand how you feel, but just like the Las Vegas shooter, this kid bought his gun legally. I grew up with guns. My dad was a reserve duty police officer and he collected guns and stored them in a locked safe. I used to go target shooting with him. But times have changed. You’re probably going to hate me for saying this, but I don’t believe guns like the AR-15 should be available to the general public. I also believe that in order to purchase a gun you should have to pass more than a basic background check. You should also need a permit or license, neither of which are required in Fla. They don’t even require you to register your weapon(s). I’m sorry. I’m so sick and tired of seeing these incidents play out on the news and we never do anything. Not in regards to guns. Not in regards to helping the mentally ill. Not in regards to supporting agencies who work with at risk youth and their families. How long will it be before the next massacre and we’re back here debating the same exact thing? How many more people have to die? How many more children have to go on camera, students like David Hoggs, and beg adults to do something?

We will have to agree to disagree. We both have similar backgrounds. These people do need to be held accountable. I am not familiar with Florida laws or lack there of. I am in CA. We have more than enough and many are so stupid and obviously written by people who have no clue what they are talking about but that is a whole separate matter. At the end of the day the gun is not the issue. It’s people. We have to start asking ourselves what is happening to people. 30 years ago this was not an issue and I still had access to these very same guns. It’s easier to focus on the object and much harder to address the people aspect. I struggle with letting mentally ill buy guns when I agree with the constitution. This kid has had issues. My understanding of how he came to have the gun are different but crap gets printed all over so no sense in arguing that. My point is the foster parents should have had a clue this kid was not safe with a gun. Had issues or something. How do we fix those issues? I don’t care how many laws pass this will still happen until we get to the root of issues and the guns are not it. I wish it were more simple because we could fix it and no more children or innocent people would die. But, people are complex and solutions to greed, illness and stupidity won’t come easy.

You’re right. This is a complex issue and it needs a multifaceted approach to fix it. Our society has changed since 30 years ago. Violence has become such a prevalent part of our culture, and now we have social media which for all its positives, also helps spread it. But when both sides can’t even agree to start talking, then nothing will get done and more of these incidents will happen. Thank you for your comments.

It’s been good dialogue. Violence and social media have become part of the culture…. where violence is more acceptable? Our children are recording fights, stabbing and shootings instead of trying to be a part of a solution or even call 911. Why is this acceptable? It’s not but peoples choices and actions should be held accountable. Many times they aren’t. While I appreciate your perspective, to some degree, you have to understand that a good person following the laws are not responsible nor accountable for someone who has broken them. It reminds me of teachers who punish the class every time a couple of kids mess up. Extremely over simplified compared to this but the impact applies. And, you’re welcome. Hope you have a great day.
