Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Teen for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: Most know Androma Racella as the Bloody Baroness, a powerful mercenary whose reign of terror stretches across the Mirabel Galaxy. To those aboard her glass starship, Marauder, however, she’s just Andi, their friend and fearless leader.
But when a routine mission goes awry, the Marauder’s all-girl crew is tested as they find themselves in a treacherous situation and at the mercy of a sadistic bounty hunter from Andi’s past.
Meanwhile, across the galaxy, a ruthless ruler waits in the shadows of the planet Xen Ptera, biding her time to exact revenge for the destruction of her people. The pieces of her deadly plan are about to fall into place, unleashing a plot that will tear Mirabel in two.
Andi and her crew embark on a dangerous, soul-testing journey that could restore order to their ship or just as easily start a war that will devour worlds. As the Marauder hurtles toward the unknown, and Mirabel hangs in the balance, the only certainty is that in a galaxy run on lies and illusion, no one can be trusted.
From it’s gorgeous cover to the science fiction premise starring an all girl crew, I really thought I was going to love Zenith, but for me it turned out to be a bloody mess.
First, a trigger warning and a spoiler. There’s a female character who for some reason that’s never fully explained, has the power to compel people. And in one scene, she compels a male character into having sex with her. It’s technically not aggressive, nor is it explicitly described, but to me that’s rape, pure and simple and I feel like it would have been remiss of me not to bring it up. There’s also a lot of violence, so this is definitely meant for older teens.
As for the rest of the story it has way too many characters and POVs (six) that sound too much alike leaving me utterly frustrated. The worst one of all is Andi who simultaneously looks forward to killing people because of the sense of power it gives her, yet wrings her hands and bemoans her actions, until the next time that is. The other characters are for the most part no better, and many of their actions made no sense and bordered on being ludicrous.
As far as the plot goes, nothing, absolutely nothing happens until the last 40 pages or so. This made it tortuous to read and to be honest I would have given up before the halfway mark, except that I was sent this by the publisher and felt obligated to try to finish it. Adding to all this is lazy, derivative, uninspired world building in which I could easily pick out scenes that were eerily reminiscent of ones like for instance, the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars.
I could keep going, but I’m stopping now because I’m getting steamed up again just thinking about it. I think you all know by now that I hate slamming a book like this. These two authors no doubt spent a lot of time creating this. In my humble opinion though, Zenith had no business being published in its current form. The only reason I can think of that could explain why it was pushed through, is because Sasha Alsberg is a celebrity Booktuber. The co-author, Lindsay Cummings is a fairly well established YA author and I’ve read a few of her books and enjoyed them, so I’m not sure what happened here. I’m absolutely floored that the editor gave their stamp of approval to this. I’m giving Zenith 1 star for the admittedly cool concept and pretty cover. Otherwise, I’m sorry. I simply cannot bring myself to recommend this to anyone. Needless to say I won’t be picking up the sequel.
Thank you for this honest review! I have seen a lot of mixed reviews for this one, and wasn’t sure I wanted to pick it up to be honest. If I am going to pick up a book that length at this point, I think I am leaning more towards Renegades than this…
I really appreciate the warnings and the honesty!

Thanks Samantha. I really do hate ripping apart a book like this, but honestly, this never should have been published in its current form. This is the second book (the first being Kiera Drake’s Continent), that has me wondering about the editors at Harlequin Teen.😒

I was wanting to read this book when I first heard of it because it sounded amazing but every person I know of has rated it low and said they wasn’t a fan. I don’t think I am going to try it. Thank you so much for the honest review!

I really hate trashing a book, but in my humble opinion this needed to be heavily edited before being published.

I have heard that from a lot of people. I am the same way but I can’t honestly write a review about a book I don’t like. Its better to be honest.

I’ve seen this book pop up a lot on Instagram, thanks for your honest review. I think I’ll give this one a miss.
I’ve read a couple of books, published by big companies, that have been of poor quality. It’s a little baffling as to how the get through.

In cases like this I blame the editors more than the authors.

Absolutely, I also understand that they’re pressured to release the novel quickly.

One book blogger friend–who didn’t like the book much anyways–was particularly upset that they would claim “#1 New York Times Bestselling Authors” on the cover, given that this is Sasha’s debut novel. How you become a #1 Bestseller without actually publishing a book is anyone’s guess. 😛

I didn’t understand that either.🤷🏻♀️

I saw one star, and still read the review. It sounds pretty silly to me, and I think you should get your head well before bothering with more like this. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

This was truly atrocious Pete. I’m just trying to catch up on a few reviews before the craziness that’s coming next week. I think I’ll be taking the weekend off though.

Umm. Those are some things that are difficult to get past. I really don’t care for POV that changes too much. Now and then, fine, but not half a dozen times. Thanks for a mindful review, Kim. TGIF hugs!

Thanks Teagan. There’s going to be a sequel but I don’t think I’ll be giving that a shot. Hugs!

I think it’s fantastic that you finished it. I wouldn’t have, if I felt so strongly. Also, props for writing what I still believe to be constructive criticism. I hope enough reviewers are as honest and detailed and maybe they’ll decide to do some revisions and make this into something worthwhile.

Definitely skipping this one due to yer description. I am not on board with that kind of shameful behavior. I am glad I got the warning and do not waste me time or money on this one. This is why I be glad to read negative reviews!

Yikes! Definitely going to be steering clear of this one! Sounds like a bit of a nightmare! …and SIX POVs?? That is WAY to many…

This sounds like rehash trash and a real clunker. Amazing how some books are picked up and pushed by big pub houses, while many more worthwhile books go ignored. Oh well, such is publishing . . . and life! 🙂

I love that you’re so honest about your opinion, that’s great. I’m sorry you didn’t like it, honestly I don’t think I’m going to read this book, I’ve heard only bad things about it, I feel that the book is given too much credit just for who write it and that is so annoying. I love Sasha but I still agree with you about why they have published the book and it’s a shame 😒😕

Than you Sofi. I really don’t like trashing someone’s “baby” but this was simply awful. I honestly blame the publisher and editor the most. They did a disservice not only to the readers but to Sasha and Lindsay as well.

Great review! I’ve heard a lot of negative things about this book and it sounds like this is just confirming all of that. It’s a shame the world building seems derivative and ugh it sounds so frustrating that the characters made no sense. It sounds like it was so boring and badly done for most of the book- it’s just so terrible that it was published in this form
Honestly, I have zero desire to read this book, sorry you ended up having such a miserable experience with it!

Ouch. I was seeing 4 and 5 star reviews on this at one point and seriously debated on clicking it myself but after reading your review I’m happy I didn’t. I would completely agree with you on that scene too. I remember reading an author and really liking one fantasy series then started in on a historical romance and by book 3 she had the female not taking no for an answer which didn’t sit well with me, just because it was a woman pressuring didn’t make it right. Then in book 4 she moved to a m/m relationship and the same darn thing, one pressured and wouldn’t stop when told no over and over. Uncomfortable and the last I bothered with so yes, using some sort of powers without consent doesn’t sound any better at all. Oh and you know me with very little action…. *yawn*

I have a feeling you’d wind up being frustrated by this as well Carrie. There’s a lot more 1-2 star reviews on Goodreads now for this and many shared the same issues I did, which makes me feel better, as I’m not the only one. And I hated that scene, especially as it seemed there were no repercussions.😡

I know I did look it up after seeing your review and now it has just as many 1 and 2s as it did the better reviews which doesn’t make it as appealing as before. Honestly I think what sealed me shying away from it was taking the chance on such a lengthy title anyway.

Thank you so much Jay. You know how much it kills me to do this to someone’s book. I knew after the first few chapters how horrible it was going to be, but as I said, I felt a responsibility to finish it as it was an eARC.😒

You see that #1 NYT best authors stamped on the front, I can see why you’d get those hopes up. Doesn’t really sound like my forte as is, but I still feel kinda bad you were disappointed… If that makes sense lol

I don’t even know where the heck they got that Didi. This is Sasha Alsberg’s first book and although Lindsay has written a few popular YA books, I wasn’t aware they made the NYT bestseller list, let alone made it to #1.🤷🏻♀️

What an atrocity! And yes, that is definitely rape. How does such a thing even get released to the public. It doesn’t even sound like it’s trying to hide its flaws! Sorry you had to go through this one. Saving all of us the trouble of ever picking it up.

I honestly don’t know what happened Lashaan. This is the second time this has happened with a book from Harlequin Teen. The first one was The Continent by Keira Drake. That one was just flat out racist. It makes you wonder what the editors there are doing.🤷🏻♀️

I keep seeing so many low rating reviews on this book, so I’m definitely going to avoid. I truly wonder what happened. Did it not go through BETA readers? How were all of these issues not caught? I don’t get it. But it just sounds like a huge train wreck. I’m so sorry you read this, and hopefully the next book you picked up after this was a billion times better!

When I saw the one star, all I could think was, “What a shame. It’s such a pretty cover.” But that “compelling” power is NOT cool. If you’re going to use a paradigm like that, you have to show that the character is wrong to do it (I’ve written a few stories that deal with mind control, and I always make sure to bring stuff like that up). That would make me very uncomfortable. I don’t think there should be a problem with teens reading about sex and violence, because they exist and need to be known, but books that show abusive behavior to be okay or acceptable make me uncomfortable. It’s why I have such problems with Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey 😦

I agree Adrienne. If it’s presented as something that’s not acceptable, than that’s fine. This wasn’t though. And don’t even get me started on Fifty Shades of Trash!😠

I could rant about that for DAYS. I’m happy that most people see the issues with it, but it worries me that young women are reading things like this and thinking it’s an okay relationship 😡
