Today was a bit of a rough day, and I was sitting in my chair just trying to zone out when this song started playing in the background of a tv show. Hushabye Mountain has always been a comforting and soothing song for me since I first heard Dick Van Dyke sing it in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. So for any of you who also had a Manic Monday, here it is.

A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain

Josh Rossi ~ Real Life Superhero

Back in 2017, photographer Josh Rossi became famous with a photo series of sick and disabled children turned into Justice League superheroes.

So what could he do to possibly equal that? He found 15 kids who have been victims of horrible bullying and turned them into the Avengers of Bullying! Josh and his wife Roxanne got the idea after seeing the trailer for the new Avengers: Infinity War. He’s spent the last three months working on this incredible project and here are just some of the results.

Jackson Bezzant was born with Treacher Collins syndrome which has left him with facial deformities. Viciously bullied and called “monster” and “freak” by classmates, he’s now Captain America, the leader of the Avengers in their battle against the ultimate bully of the universe, Thanos.

Sydney Gerardis (Gamora), was contemplating suicide when her “friends” told her they’d throw a party if she died. Take a look at her now!

Classmates of Grant Southam (Iron Man), would yell “The retard is here” and beat their chests as he walked by.

Colton Helton (Vision), is gender fluid and has suffered from bullying as a result.

Synopsis: Cliff Hubbard is a huge loser. Literally. His nickname at Happy Valley High School is Neanderthal because he’s so enormous—-6’6” and 250 pounds to be exact. He has no one at school and life at his trailer park home has gone from bad to worse since his older brother’s suicide.

There’s no one Cliff hates more than the nauseatingly cool quarterback, Aaron Zimmerman. Then Aaron returns to school after a near-death experience with a bizarre claim: while he was unconscious he saw God, who gave him a list of things to do to make Happy Valley High suck less. And God said there’s only one person who can help: Neanderthal.

To his own surprise, Cliff says he’s in. As he and Aaron make their way through the List, which involves a vindictive English teacher, a mysterious computer hacker, a decidedly unchristian cult of Jesus Teens, the local drug dealers, and the meanest bully at HVHS—-Cliff feels like he’s part of something for the first time since losing his brother. But fixing a broken school isn’t as simple as it seems, and just when Cliff thinks they’ve completed the List, he realizes their mission hits closer to home than he ever imagined.

Neanderthal Opens the Door To The Universe is one of those books that took me by surprise in regards to how much I liked it. While some of the dialogue is a little awkward and it’s intentionally filled with high school cliches, because of the well-rounded and relatable characters, interesting plot, and positive message, it has a certain charm to it that I think will appeal to a wide audience. The story tackles many social issues: suicide, drug abuse, religious fanaticism, homophobia, bullying, and child abuse. But it never devolves into an annoying after school special/soap opera. This is partly due to the dry humor that pervades the story, but also because the darker themes are balanced by the inspiring responses from the teenage characters.

In the end, Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe is quite uplifting and it’s a story I won’t forget anytime soon. Because of the colorful language involved and dark topics, I wouldn’t recommend this for older teens. I think it’s a wonderful choice for high school classrooms, forthcoming summer reading lists, and book discussion groups.

I want to thank everyone who has sharing my fundraiser. When it comes to putting yourself out there and asking for money in that manner, I have to admit there has been a lot of shame. Trust me I battled myself and kicked my ass for having to do this. I mean in the blogosphere, I love to be the jokey and overly affectionate Dani(which I still am) but things got to the absolute point where I had no choice but to do it.

By all means, do I want anyone to suffer because of me but having people’s thoughts, shares, and prayers/vibes has given me hope beyond measure. Because of the individuals whom have shared on Twitter and here I was able to get one of my medications for my seizures and a partial on my chemotherapy medication. I know many have wondered where in the hell I have been… Well yes I have battled grief and yes I have had issues going online but I haven’t shared it all.
I have went through way more than grief, I have been fighting for my ability to take care of my children and to get the medical treatment for my family. Long story short, we have lost most of our income and medical benefits.

We went weeks without electricity, had to cut back like barely nothing on food for kids to have it and we have went without medical supplies and medications.

I have been battling seizures without my medicine and haven’t been able to caretaker my son’s father who has a brain injury and can’t remember 20 mins ago or long term. My child’s mother has been battling renal failure with no way to go to the doctor…
