Anyone who is somewhat familiar with comedian Rosanne Barr, knows she’s extremely outspoken, is a fervent Trump supporter, and is a believer in all sorts of right wing conspiracy series. This morning however she went on a Twitter rampage that (and I can’t believe I’m saying this), outdoes Trump’s most offensive tweets. I’m not going to repeat any of them because they’re vile and make me sick to my stomach, but if you haven’t heard about them and want to see them, just Google her. As I was writing this post, the news just broke that the Disney-owned ABC has canceled the second season of the successful Rosanne reboot. To say I’m overjoyed is an understatement. Racism in the U.S. is running rampant and the repugnant individuals who espouse these beliefs have been given carte blanche by the Trump administration to say and do whatever they want. Yes I believe in the First Amendment, but not when it comes to hate speech that serves to encourage violence against minorities. So, while I wish they had never brought back Rosanne to begin with, kudos to ABC for sending a quick and decisive message that racism and bigotry won’t be tolerated even by big name stars.

She’s so genuinely awful. Kudos to ABC for responding this way, I guess, but they shouldn’t have brought it back in the first place. It’s sad when I’m shocked to see someone face actual consequences for behavior like this.

I totally agree that her statements were absolutely wrong! But, I will say that I feel bad for the other actors in the show. Many of them haven’t done anything since the original and some of them are kids to whom this was probably a big break. It’s a shame that they’re all out of jobs because of her racist idiocy.

I do feel badly for them, but for this show to go on, at least with her in it would have been completely unacceptable. I’m so angry about what what’s happening in this country. We need to start taking a stronger stance against this repugnant behavior, because frankly…not enough is being done.

Can’t say I was particularly surprised by this news, but it was refreshing that the show got cancelled immediately despite its apparent popularity. Kudos to the network for that.
Per the comments above, I am now trying to imagine her singing the National Anthem at some Trump event. I’m sure the crowds would find some reason to love it anyway and explain it all away. :sighs:

I haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to her, but my take is she has always been crude. That isn’t really anything new. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with being outspoken or having an opinion. However, it’s possible to express your views without being crude about it. I do have a Twitter account but I’m not on there very much. It seems to be a place for celebrity-types to spout nonsense.

This definitely isn’t the first time she’s spouted racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, anti-Islamic garbage, which was why I was outraged when the Rosanne show was brought back to begin with, and discouraged that it wound up such a hit. But you’re right Michelle. Nothing she says should surprise anyone.

I haven’t seen the most recent version of the show, but I watched the original occasionally back in the day…That’s been quite a few years ago now. There were some good things about it. The idea of a working-class family dealing with life was interesting, and I did like how her character didn’t put up with any nonsense from anyone. However, the character and the actress both grated on my nerves, so it wasn’t a show I really got into.

I’m not a big fan of sitcoms either Fraggle. I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of ones I’ve liked over the years. Because I never cared for Rosanne Barr even before she went crackers and started spouting off racist, bigoted tirades, I didn’t even watch the first Rosanne. I was especially dismayed that Disney-owned ABC thought to reboot it and was so discouraged when it became a hit. I realize the rest of the cast are extremely talented. I especially love John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf. But let’s face it. Rosanne is at the heart of the show and she’s such vile despicable person, I can’t separate her from her fictional persona.

I am always amused when people like Rosanne decide to apply their comedy “schtick” (her’s being disgustingly rude and obnoxious) to the real world public arena. It always makes me chuckle when the walls come down around them and for the life of them they don’t know how all this backfired so badly. LOL!
I honestly do feel sorry for all the people in the background for the show that will lose their jobs over the show being cancelled.

Racism is disgusting and abhorrent. However, as awful as racism is, I still have to support free speech, no matter how repugnant it is, even if it’s hateful. Now, that doesn’t mean free speech gives the right for one to make death threats to people. That I agree with. However, it does mean that people can hold bigoted views and sadly, much to my chagrin, express them. Error must be allowed in the public sphere so that the truth can be made manifest. Yes, it’s scary seeing all of this hatred and racism in our country, but it’s also encouraging people to speak up more, to say that’s wrong, to defend minorities.
It should also be noted that a private syndicate has the right to cancel a show if they feel it doesn’t measure up to their standards. Hence, Roseanne was canceled because they felt it wasn’t a good fit for their channel. However, I don’t recall her threatening anyone with death in her tweet, so we can’t make what she said illegal. We can be disgusted by it, we can call her out on it, but we can’t send her to jail for it. Nor would it be wise to do so. After all, while I am repulsed by what she said, everyone has said something hateful about someone before, as much as I am pained to admit it.
Furthermore, the making hate speech illegal slope is slippery. As I already stated, if you make death threats to someone that is illegal and rightfully so. But the idea of wanting to outlaw hate speech in general, as noble as it sounds, can easily be good intentions that quickly turn evil. Sometimes when fighting against evil, if we aren’t careful, we can become evil ourselves by becoming extreme in another direction. There are calls to make hate speech illegal. Let’s say we do. Will people outlaw old classic literature because of some dated viewpoints on minorities? Will religious texts like The Holy Bible and Qua’ran be made illegal for inciting some people to commit violence in the name of God? Will the writers of comedies like The Simpsons, The Boondocks, and South Park be criminalized for making unflattering jokes about religion or people in general? Will politicians sue those for libel and defamation for parodying them in comic strips, books, and television? How about Darwin’s Origin of the Species? What if people outlawed books on evolution saying it inspired eugenics? Sound far-fetched? It’s not. As much as we don’t want to admit it, there will be those who will take hate speech laws and level them against someone or their ideas that they don’t like. Again, the desire to outlaw hate speech is a noble intention, but it’s not a realistic one. It can turn evil.
That said, we can still fight against evil. We can still fight against Neo Nazis, calling them out on the hatred they spew. We can still put white supremacists, Asian supremacists, and black supremacists and any other supremacists in their place, calling them out on their bullcrap. We can defend Muslims from Islamaphobia, Jews from anti-Semitism, and Christians and atheists from bigotry by educating people. We can mock Trump and the rest of 45. But we can’t do any of this effectively if we outlaw any part of free speech, including hate speech. Doing so doesn’t address these terrible issues but only allows said issues to fester in a pit with like-minded bigots, feeding off each other.
I know this is an unpopular viewpoint. It’s not the easy choice, but I feel it’s the right choice which calls for facing the hardships of reality.

I appreciate your honest viewpoint, but I have to somewhat disagree. Some hate speech is dangerous and shouldn’t be protected by the First Amendment. In addition to her abhorrent tweets about Valerie Jarrett and George Soros, Rosanne has also been a pusher of the so-called “Pizzagate.” That’s the conspiracy theory that insisted Hilary Clinton and others were operating a child sex trafficking ring out of Comet Ping Pong, a pizzeria. Despite being immediately and widely debunked, the owner, employees, and even bands who played there were harassed. And worst of all, some deranged individual who saw himself as a “hero” fired several shots into the restaurant. It’s a miracle no one was injured or killed.
That said, no I don’t believe anything she’s tweeted over the last couple of days should land her in prison. I also agree that making hate speech in general illegal is going down a slippery slope. However, I absolutely believe that ABC did the right thing in cancelling the show, although I feel badly for everyone else who worked on it. Racism and bigotry are worse now than they have been since the 1960s because Trump and his administration have basically given permission to these people to do and say whatever they want. We need to make it clear that their words and actions are not acceptable and will have consequences.

Rosane is by no mean a conservative. She does not represent conservative values and is a full blown looney character. Unfortunately for us conservatives, she was an actress outspoken for Trump and Trump supporters jumped at the opportunity to stand behind a celebrity who was outspoken for the President in a time where 99.9% of all celebrities bash Trump with every breath. What she said was wrong and disgusting, but labeling her a conservative just isn’t accurate. See her past whackadoodle tweets and statements to prove that.

You’ll notice that I never referred to Rosanne as a conservative. That said, because she is such an outspoken advocate for Mr. Trump (who I also don’t believe is a conservative), she has been embraced by not only his supporters but many Republicans as well. In my humble opinion the Republican Party has quite literally made a deal with the devil in their support of Trump and his policies.
