During a freewheeling interview with Steve Doocy from Fox News on Friday morning, Trump uttered these chilling words about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un:
Hey, he is the head of a country, and I mean he is the strong head. Don’t let anyone think anything different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.
Asked by another reporter later on about this comment Trump claimed he was kidding. Does anyone believe this?
I certainly hope no one does.

I just replied to John why I don’t think he was joking when he made the comment Charles. When you look back at all the admiring things he’s said about some of the worst human rights abusers around the world it puts everything into context.

Trump claimed he was kidding. Does anyone believe this?
Yes: me. The same way that, rarely for those on the left, I accepted completely that George W Bush was kidding when he said he’d like the US to be a dictatorship, so long as he could be the dictator.
It was a clumsy joke on Trump’s part. To pretend otherwise is to hand him and his cretinous supporters a (minor) victory.
There are far more serious things to be concerned about, such as the man’s vile immigration policy and his even viler AG’s evil justification for it.

In my previous post I reblogged Gronda’s excellent article on what Trump and Sessions are doing to immigrant families John. As far as Trump’s comment which was just one of many insane things he said today, I disagree with you. I don’t think he was kidding at all. At the very least it was a Freudian slip. There’s a reason why he admires dictators like Kim Jong Un, Putin, and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He likes leaders who have absolute power over their people and he doesn’t care that the cost is extreme human rights abuse. Take a look back at the fawning compliments he’s paid them. These, coupled with his resentment and disdain for our allies and the increasing attacks on the press, including calling them “the enemy of the people” should make us all very nervous.

I’m afraid I don’t think it was a joke and I believe one of his cadre suggested he call it sarcasm later. I think he’s perfectly copying Erdogan of Turkey in going for the press first and working his way up to Kim Jung un’s standards. Time Magazine suggests Royalty is his target but I think dictator is much more like it.

From over here in the UK and as someone who follows USA’s politics with interest (therefore my opinions could be wrong) I’m prepared to reluctantly concede he was kidding 🙂 I see Trump as a guy who says something out-there controversial and bullying for effect such as his metal’s tariff, it’s done for effect, time will tell after Europe begins taxing military equipment and aircraft whether he retracts and backs down.
If Trump backs down on tariff’s then that’s a sign he’s a weak guy, if he wins a trade war then that’s a sign he’s a dangerous man indeed. Great post Kim.

Thanks Andrew. If this was a one time thing I’d give him the benefit of the doubt and conclude it was a badly worded joke. However, when you take it in context with the admiring things he’s said about other “strongmen” around the globe, It’s hard to believe it was a joke.
As far as the tariffs go, the only way he’ll back down is if this starts hurting his constituents and they leave him.

He does know that people need to fear or respect him for that to happen… Right?? THAT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! 😕

Yeah, but don’t forget he does have millions of supporters who think he’s wonderful Nicole. Granted they’re a minority, but they’re still powerful. Look at the Republicans who lost their primaries this past week. They all had pretty much one thing in common: they spoke out against Trump.

I saw a You Tube thing a while back, comparing Trump to Mussolini. He seems to have adopted the mannerisms, struts, hand movements, everything about the Italian dictator. The similarities are remarkable, but II can’t find the right link to show you today. However, this gives the flavour of his admiration for Il Duce.

Thanks Dani. Did you hear Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has announced his retirement? I told Tom this is the beginning of the U.S. going back to the Dark Ages. Roe v Wade, marriage equality, affirmative action, civil rights…😰

Agreed, Kim. It’s an absolute disaster. I cannot imagine what’s gone through Kennedy’s head for him to desert the interests of his country at a time like this.

Considering how he wanted a military parade, I’m not surprised. When that one reporter a few weeks ago slipped when talking about the talks with Kim and said “the two dictators”, I thought she wasn’t that far off, in that he certainly seems to want to be one.

I think it was a Freudian slip. He’s said (and done) other things that show he wants to go be a dictator. The scary part is that he’s getting there. Nobody tells him “no” and gets away with it. There are a lot of examples of him just doing whatever he wants regardless of what the other branches of government decide, if they’re even allowed to be part of the decision. One of those examples is the sanctions against Putin and his regime. It was passed by both Senate and Congress, even set up so he (Trump) couldn’t veto it, yet he hasn’t allowed it to happen. I’m so tired of him making “declarations” I could scream.
He desperately wants people to “love and respect” him like the North Koreans do with their “beloved leader” that he can’t see that it’s fear that makes them act that way.
Sorry for going on a rant. To answer the question clearly, no, I don’t believe he was kidding or making some kind of joke. I believe he was expressing his true desires.
This was a great post about a very important issue.

Thank you, and feel free to rant away. I agree with everything you’ve said here and would only add one thing. There was a poll done among Republicans a few months ago where participants were asked if they would be okay with Trump staying in office if there were accusations that the elections were “rigged”. An overwhelming majority said yes.

I think he says what he feels. Then when he’s called out on it later, he always acts like it was a joke. It was another scary comment from him that should make everyone outraged.

Agreed. I’ve pretty much stopped going on Twitter and Facebook because it leaves me so frustrated/angry/depressed. And him winning…. that Nov was the first time I was seriously tackling NaNoWriMo. I was doing so well, then BAM. The shock shut me down. It did several authors, including many prominent ones, I remember. I’ve yet to regain my motivation to finish that book. It’s like there’s a wall between my creativity and I…

I remember that November day. I didn’t think he would actually win! I tried Nano in 2017. I didn’t even get close to finishing. I hope you get to finish the book.

I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen Lashaan. Yes, our government has safeguards in place to prevent something like that from happening, but under the right circumstances, like say a terrorist attack, I could see it happening. Several months ago there was a poll done among Republicans which asked if they were told the 2020 was rigged would they support Trump remaining in office for an unspecified period of time and the majority responded yes. That scares the heck out of me.
