If you live in the U.S. and you’re like me, you may be viewing tomorrow with some mixed feelings. We have a president who is showing more tendencies toward dictatorship by the hour. Civil rights are under attack, as is the press—both figuratively and literally after last week’s shooting at the Capital Gazette. And we seem to have lost sight of the fact that our country was founded by immigrants. Here’s the Trump Administration’s latest salvo at desperate parents attempting to apply for asylum.
To be honest, there are some days that I don’t even recognize this country anymore. But I haven’t given up hope. Not yet anyway. So tomorrow I’ll celebrate the birth of our nation like I do every year, but at the same time I’ll be praying for its future. I hope all of you have a wonderful and safe 4th of July!

I continue to hold out hope that all this is temporary. I pray that hope is rewarded. I think it’s pretty obvious that this kind of fascism will not be tolerated and will not become our norm. McCarthy tried and failed. This buffoon can try as well, but he will fail too. Don’t give up hope. Happy 4th to you as well. 😊

Me too. Good will prevail in this battle. What I find ironic, is we’ll see and hear all his patriotic bullshit tomorrow, yet he’s behaving just like the asshats our founders were fleeing from. Do he and his sheep-like minions not understand that?!? They all baffle me. Wish they’d all just disappear.

Never give up hope Kim. That’s always one of the best things to hold on too. I really hope things will turn for the better for your county. For now though I hope (there is that word again) that you will still be able to enjoy tomorrow’s festivities. Have a great 4th July Kim 😊😊

Most welcome!! I’m having quite a difficult time … in a sense, those people at the border are MY people! With SCOTUS changing … my lifestyle ‘choices’ may be illegal again …

Happy 4th, Kim! As you know, I share your near-despair. Moments before reading your post, I was reading about how the Toddler-in-Chief plans to rescind yet another piece of progress that Obama instigated and it crossed my mind that he’s in the process of destroying all the things that, given time, would Help Make America Great.
There are times I wonder if all the conspiracy theories are true that he really is Putin’s poodle, the Siberian Candidate, his mission to destroy the West . . .

Happy 4th John! I just heard about the latest attack on affirmative action.It is indeed the ultimate in irony that instead of Making America Great, he’s tearing it asunder.
It’s interesting that the Senate Intelligence Committee today upheld the intelligence community’s findings that Putin interfered inthe election. Not that Trump will pay any attention to them. I’m dreading the upcoming summit.

I just saw that too. I guess some of the GOP senators are beginning to realize that not all of their electors are going to carry on believing the Party line over the very obvious evidence.

I am not American, but the activities of your president get extensive coverage in Australian media. I feel so sorry for those poor kids and their parents. I can’t imagine what it would be like being so young and separated from family.

Thank you! I think the positive things our country has done is the reason why I’m not ready to give up yet. We’ve gone through dark periods (slavery, what we did to the Native Americans, the WWII Japanese internment camps, segregation…) but somehow we always manage to turn things around. I hope that will be the case here.

I love America. I love our Constitution and Bill of Rights. But with our current presidency and the hatred growing in our country right now, I am just not feeling very festive. It’s actually rather depressing for me.

I would never compare my own PTSD (Post Tr**p Stress Disorder) to that of our returning soldiers, but it regularly leaves me shaken, nauseous, and off center. It feels like something I have to survive. The only thing that can make a difference is for EVERYONE to get out and vote!.
