That was pretty head-shaking, face-calming bad. 😔

I meant to say face-palming. Sorry! My Autocorrect has a perverse sense of humor.

That’s a relief! 😅 I kept imagining someone reading that comment and wondering what exactly “face-calming” meant.

And he’s the chairman of his department. Goes to prove that you can have multiple degrees and still be an idiot!😡

Now I want to race straight over to my wonderful public library and thank the staff!

What…. in…. the… world. While I adore Amazon not everyone can buy all their books. Also, libraries do so much more. Research, reading papers, mine has conference rooms. We also have groups meet there and people use the computers. It isn’t just about snagging a book now and then. Also, the author has a point…. why Amazon in particular?

Exactly! And what about all the free programming?🤷🏻♀️

Since we don’t have public libraries, amazon has been a boon especially when my friend’s library shut down. Amazon’s library, if it ever happens will not work in my country as maintaining it will increase the overall costs of books and other stuff. Logistics won’t work for us. Kindle unlimited has been a boon for my family. Everyone reads
Secondly, when I was a kid, at the age of 4, my father pushed me (I was extremely painfully shy) into a library, in those times, we had one, and it was well maintained. Kim, I can’t tell you the joy I felt to know I can escape into another world. One day I would write a post.
I do remember the joy of discovering and loving my library but since everything shut down, I do remember the joy of discovering ebooks.
I don’t know if my comment is face calming or palming. But it has been a fact of my life.

Thank you for sharing you childhood memories Shalini. I’m so sorry you don’t still have access to public libraries. I can’t imagine not being able to check out free print materials as well as ebooks. I’d be in so much trouble!

I am glad you understood. Each country has its own share of problems.. We will not go there I don’t want you banging your head 🤦🏻🤷🏻

I read the original post over on Sam’s blog yesterday, and it really is something that in my opinion will never happen. It’s pretty much the same with shopping. While I think it’s great to be able to buy things online, I love shopping and going to the shops physically much more. And it’s the same with libraries.

So….. how much did Amazon pay him?

Well I didn’t think I needed to say more, you’ve already established he’s an idiot. LOL

You know Beth, it’s not just a matter of differing opinions. It’s that this article wasn’t well-researched. Not a good thing for an economics professor who’s also the chair of his department.

Our Tory government has closed at least 479 libraries since 2010, that figure from 2017 so there will be more by now
Amazon is all we’ll have left at this rate.

I’ve read about so many libraries being closed over in England Fraggle. It’s so sad. Libraries, in addition to being able to check out free materials, libraries have evolved into so much more. They truly are an essential part of every community.

I don’t have one near me, so I do the kindle thing or buy 2nd hand books cheapo from Amazon.

Hmm.. Either he was paid for it or he has been for too long in his own capitalistic bubble. I suspect he hasn’t stepped into a library for a long time… I would recommend him to do that, he clearly needs it.

I remember being appalled and outraged at Barnes and noble, when I asked an apathetic worker about the location of a book by MAYA ANGELOU. He said, “dunno. What’s he write.”
After security unleashed my hands from around his skinny little neck…
Well, let’s just say I never wanted to strangle a librarian.

Oh Good God!🤦🏻♀️ While librarians certainly aren’t perfect, the majority of us (Even though I’m retired I will always consider myself a librarian), go into the profession because we’re truly passionate about books and were committed to providing the best free services to our patrons, no matter what socioeconomic background they come from.

Complete nonsense. Amazon is only interested in profits, and could never encompass the heart and spirit of our public libraries.
Best wishes, Pete.

I do like Amazon and Starbucks (although I don’t agree with some of their business practices, but that is for another post). However, NOTHING could ever replace a library. This person is definitely misinformed.

For a professor and chairman of his department, he showed extremely lazy and shoddy research.

There’s something so special about the library. I have always thought that.

I’m starting to hate Amazon even as I hypocritically JUST bought a Kindle book and received a package in the mail from them today. They treat they employees like garbage, like so many other multi-billion dollar companies refuse to (not CAN’T) pay a living wage, and Jeff Bezos is worth like $150 billion? Now they want to try to replace libraries? And the people who won’t be hurt by this overwhelmingly don’t understand why this is horrible. But in our “I’ve got mine” culture, what does it matter if the most vulnerable suffer 😡

I know how you feel Adrienne as I have a love/hate relationship with Amazon myself. To be fair though, this wasn’t something that Amazon brought up. No, this was the elitist opinion of a professor who obviously did not do his research into the evolution of modern libraries before mouthing off.
