Synopsis: Welcome to a world where nightmarish creatures reign supreme.
Five hundred years ago, Jack made a deal with the devil. It’s difficult for him to remember much about his mortal days. So, he focuses on fulfilling his sentence as a Lantern—one of the watchmen who guard the portals to the Otherworld, a realm crawling with every nightmarish creature imaginable. Jack has spent centuries jumping from town to town, ensuring that nary a mortal—or not-so-mortal—soul slips past him. That is, until he meets beautiful Ember O’Dare.
Seventeen, stubborn, and a natural-born witch, Ember feels a strong pull to the Otherworld. Undeterred by Jack’s warnings, she crosses into the forbidden plane with the help of a mysterious and debonair vampire—and the chase through a dazzling, dangerous world is on. Jack must do everything in his power to get Ember back where she belongs before the earthly and unearthly worlds descend into chaos.
I was so excited to read this retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, especially as it’s written by Colleen Houck who wrote the imaginative Tiger’s Curse series. I’m sorry to say that while it wasn’t a complete wash, I was left disappointed.
This is set sometime after the Salem witch trials, but you don’t really get a sense of where Ember lives. Most of the story focuses on the “otherworld” which is much more developed in terms of technology. It’s a little steampunkish which thrilled me to no end, and as usual the author does a beautiful job with world building. What did let me down though, was the lack of thrills and chills. I was expecting so much more spookiness given the story this was based on.
My main issue however was with the characters. First, there’s a love square, and you guys know how much I love those. (Yes that was sarcasm.) And, this was one of those rare stories where I actually liked the secondary characters more than the main one. I didn’t have strong feelings about Ember and Jack either way. They were just sort of “meh” for me. I loved the others though, especially Deila who’s a kickass pirate captain with a metal tooth. She’s all kinds of awesome and deserves her own story.
And finally, the way The Lantern’s Ember is written, it feels more middle-schoolish even with the annoying romantic entanglements. Ultimately this latest book by Houck just didn’t live up to my expectations. I’m still a fan of the author though so hopefully this is a one off.
Wonderful honest review Kim. I do recall some books where I loved the side characters better than the main ones…

Thanks so much Sophie. I’ve had this happen a few times as well. BTW, I’m sorry I haven’t been over to visit. I’m still having a rough time healthwise, but I’ll be over ASAP.🤗

Thanks Shalini. A love square involves 4 people instead of 3.🤦🏻♀️

Maybe not my thing to start with, and your review killed it stone dead. But full marks for the great cover! 🙂

Hmm, really sorry to hear this. I was really excited when I read the premise and heard it was a retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But then when I read further, the enthusiasm left me so to speak. And ugh…saw the sarcasm immediately. Not a particular fan of those either. Well…Hopefully you next book is going to be better! 😀 Still, great review as always Kim 😊

Yeah I can imagine. Always a shame when a book that looks promising ends up being a dissappointment😢

A love square??? That is just way too many people. To bad though because I don’t hear about many Sleepy Hollow retellings… which immediately makes me want to go rewatch the movie!

I don’t understand why authors keep including these, love triangles, and insta-love in their books. Don’t they read reviews and comments? 🤷🏻♀️

Great review Kim! I’m actually glad you said pretty much the same that I did with this one and it wasn’t just me. The feel of the story just was a bit off to me with the content.

Thanks Carrie. It wasn’t the worst book, but I think it might be one of my biggest disappointments of this year.

Yes, definitely not what I expected but I couldn’t say it was “bad” either.

You’re not the first person that I’ve seen write a critical review for this one. I wanted an ARC so bad, but it seems that I didn’t miss out on top much. The idea made it sound so good, but the execution apparently wasn’t. That secondary character does sound super interesting.

I’d suggest maybe checking it out from the library. That way you’re not out anything if you dislike it. Deila needs her own book!

I find that there are many books where I prefer the side characters to the main one, perhaps because the way secondary characters are developed leaves more for my imagination to fill in. The idea of a Sleepy Hollow retelling intrigues me, though, and I begin to wonder if there might be another floating around out there that I might pick up for next month…

There’s the Jason Crane trilogy by Richard Gleaves, that I highly recommend.☺️

Aw, that’s too bad that it wasn’t quite as good as you were expecting. Good honest review. 🙂 The cover is quite lovely and the concept sounds cool, so it’s too bad the execution didn’t quite cut it.

Nooooooo to the love squares. Why do they think this is okay?! Sigh. I’ve read a books that have that element and yeah, it doesn’t ever work out for me lol. It sounded like this book had a lot of potential though. Bummer.

I know! I don’t understand why authors persist with this trope. It’s so annoying!😡

Such a striking cover, but I feel your disappointment
