A Lovely Example of the Lack of Respect For Others That Just Keeps Growing in This Country. Thank You Gronda For Another Well Researched Article.
Like any faith-based entity, there are those who operate on the extreme fringes like with the Black Hebrew Israelites. Some could be heard acting out in racist and anti-Semitic ways, who were present at the vicinity of a March for Life rally held in Washington DC, on the 18th of January 2019. There were involved in an incident that has become embroiled in controversy.
As per the August 2008, Southern Poverty Law Center publication,” Around the country, thousands of men and women have joined black supremacist groups on the extremist fringe of the Hebrew Israelite movement, a black nationalist theology that dates back to the 19th century. Its doctrine asserts that African Americans are God’s true chosen people because they, not the people known to the world today as Jews, are the real descendants of the Hebrews of the Bible. Although most Hebrew Israelites are neither explicitly racist nor anti-Semitic and…

This happened Friday Robbie, and I’m afraid it’s blown up over here. My biggest question is where are the adult chaperones for these kids. In all the videos I’ve pored over, I saw one—who basically did nothing. Now we’ve got finger pointing from all sides and the kids and their school are getting death threats.

I was just talking to my sister about this. Both sides need to be held accountable, those younger students with the MAGA hats and the Hebrew Israelites should be shown in the same light. Both of those groups were in the wrong, and the Natives were only trying to break up the negativity. The adults were nowhere to be found throughout the whole video, it’s sad that things like this are being seen more and more, we need to do better.

I knew that was coming as several of them were wearing MAGA hats. I’m sure a White House visit is in the works.

Unlike Fraggle, I didn’t see this over here. But those smirking school kids now come across as the ‘Face of Modern America’, and that’s very sad indeed. I’m surprised that any supervising teacher would allow those ‘slogan caps’ too.
Best wishes, Pete.

I’m still waiting to hear about where the adult chaperones were Pete. With a group that size they should have had several yet I only saw one, who pretty much just stood there.

Just another example of a group of young people who’ve obviously had a serious lack of direction or guidance in life–no respect whatsoever. It made me sick when I watched it on NPR. If one of those boys were one of my kids, I’d just cry.

I agree Mischenko. The conservatives are trying to make these kids into martyrs and they’re not.

So you have these two extremist groups getting into a set to with one another, and the Native Americans who tried to break it up and got caught in the crossfire.
We also have several stories about the kids from Covington sexually harassing some young women before their altercation with the Indigenous marchers. None of the stories which have come out about them make them look at all good, and now they’re working with a PR firm to go to the media to cover their asses on what happened. The kids are trying to present themselves as total innocents who have never harmed flies, and Nathan Phillip the man being confronted in the video, is the only person who is coming out of all this looking like he’s got an ounce of sense.

While I found what the BHIs were shouting at the teens utterly loathsome, it certainly doesn’t excuse the behavior of Nick Sandmann and his classmates. I still want to know where the chaperones were. So far there’s been one parent who accompanied the kids, who’s been giving interviews to right wing media including Fox News. She’s saying she gave permission to the 200+ students to perform their sports cheer to drown out the things the BHIs were saying. This makes no sense to me. The students should have been instructed to not confront them and just ignore them. And, I’d still like to know who’s brilliant idea it was to let the kids wear MAGA hats to begin with.
As far as Mr. Phillips is concerned, sadly the vilification of him is already well underway.

I didn’t follow the story at first because it was just a clip, and social media and the MSM tend to jump to conclusion to report first on something that they don’t have all the facts to. When I heard about the Black Hebrew Israelites, it jogged my memory to our visit to D.C. last summer. We were walking to a restaurant, and on the corner on the left side of the street (we were on the right), there was a group of black people with signs that were nearly the same, if not the same as what the Westboro Baptist group uses: God hates F*gs,” “Homosexuals are going to hell.” There was another sign with Moses on it, and for the life of me, I can’t remember what it said now, but all I know was that I was shocked by what it and the other signs said, and I was confused. I didn’t know who this group of black people were. Anyway, I think they were part of this group your article mentioned.
As far as the boys, I think people were way too hard on them. They were verbally insulted by the BHIs and didn’t know what was going on with the Native Americans that came up to them. But they eventually clapped and chanted. As far as saying “Build the Wall,” I’d heard they chanted their school’s anthem. I have no idea. I guess if I wanted to bother to listen to the whole video, I may find out, but I think this news story was hyped and only causes more division between people in interpreting it in knee-jerk ways as many did on social media when it first was put out.
I think what’s important is that nothing escalated, and I think the Native American man helped in that.

I think that because of social media, this story was a bit overblown, however, my biggest issue is with the Covington chaperones. First, the boys should not have been allowed to wear the MAGA hats. Second, once the BHIs began harassing them, the group should have moved instead of encouraging the kids to perform their school cheer, which anyone with half a brain should have known was just going to aggravate the situation. Mr. Sandmann’s smirk, and his classmates’ tomahawk chops were were a combination of complete obnoxiousness and racism. But once again, I blame the chaperones. This was a group of 200+ teen boys who were feeding off each other. I wish the media had been more vocal about asking why the chaperones allowed things to spiral out of control.

You bring up a good point about chaperones. Of course, that could have helped. It is a large group of boys, and they can get rowdy. As far as the MAGA hats, I really don’t personally care that they wore them. It’s just the motto of the president, and people wore “Hope and Change” buttons and t-shirts at all kinds of rallies and marches when Obama was president. It doesn’t bother me. I didn’t vote for Trump, so it’s not that I am a supporter. I just think people have a right to wear what they feel they support or believe in, as long as it’s not hateful or offensive. And although I don’t care for our president, the motto isn’t something to get worked up over. As far as the tomahawk chops, I’d guess they did that out of ignorance or because they saw it at Atlanta Braves baseball games where all their fans do that, including the owner, Turner. Perhaps people have shared their disapproval about that in the past. I don’t know. This whole story has worked people into anger and outrage, causing more division and enmity between people, and that does nothing for humanity, imo.

My problem with the MAGA hats is because the kids were on an official school trip. I would have taken issue if they were wearing “I’m with her” apparel. I went to Washington a couple of times when I was in junior high and high school and not only was our behavior strictly monitored, but we weren’t allowed to wear t-shirts or hats with any slogans.
As far as the MAGA motto itself, it has unfortunately become symbolic with racism and bigotry. The chaperones should have known this would elicit negative responses from people. I’m not excusing the actions of the BHIs. It’s just that I think wearing the hats made the kids more of a target.
And yes, the tomahawk chop has been used at sports games, including at the AFC championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Patriots. It’s horrible and racist and I have heard people complaining about it, but that hasn’t stopped it.
Look, I don’t think these kids should have their lives ruined because of this unfortunate event. I do hope it serves as a wake up call for this school that has a 90% white student body and a 100% white faculty. Maybe they could begin by not letting their students wear blackface when playing basketball games against another team that has minority players.
