Yesterday’s Michael Cohen testimony before the House Oversight Committee was filled with all the unprofessional grandstanding, bloviating, and childish name calling that was expected. There was also a surprising and outrageous addition of tokenism from Republican Mark Meadows, who for some bizarre reason thought it was a great idea to trot out Lynne Patton (former wedding planner for Eric Trump who is now a HUD official), who stood silently behind him while he used her as a prop to explain why Mr. Trump can’t possibly be racist.

I’m not going to get into the hours of sad, pathetic, and embarrassing behavior of some of the Republican members of the Oversight Committee, but I would like to focus on two high points. The first came when Democrat Freshman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had her turn to question Mr. Cohen and brilliantly laid the foundation for requesting Mr. Trump’s tax returns.

The second moment came when the committee chairman, Elijah Cummings gave his closing remarks. They were heartfelt and inspiring, and stopped me (for now) from immediately wanting to leave the country.
