Hispanic Heritage Month started Sunday so I apologize for being a few days late in marking this month-long tribute to the countless contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans. I thought I’d begin by paying tribute to an author and poet whose writing has captivated me since I read her classic coming-of-age novel, The House On Mango Street. I am of course talking about the incomparable Sandra Cisneros, who deservedly won this year’s PEN/Nabokov Award For Achievement In International Literature. Throughout her career she has focused on telling everyday stories of the working class and is a consistent presence on Summer Reading lists around the country.
I try to be as honest about what I see and to speak rather than be silent, especially if it means I can save lives, or serve humanity.

Thank you Suzan. I’m not Hispanic myself, but it’s so important to celebrate the contributions that different cultures make to this country.

I suppose you have sufficient people of Hispanic heritage to warrant a whole month.
I will let you off this one, Kim. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

I’d like to thank two adventurous brothers from Segovia, Spain who decided to have a new life in the Philippines in the 1800’s. Without them, I wouldn’t be here thanking them. ^__^

An author that influenced me when I was a young aspiring writer was Gary Soto. Thank Mrs. Osborn wherever you are!
