Today’s Google Doodle honors acclaimed yet tortured writer Sylvia Plath, who if she had lived, would have turned 87 years-old today. Plath battled severe depression before tragically taking her own life in 1963. The stunning artwork by Sophie Diao is a reference to Plath’s 1956 poem Spinster.

The first and only book I read by Plath is The Bell Jar. I felt her pain so strongly I needed to distance myself from her works for a bit. I didn’t know this poem of hers, thank you for posting it!

That’s what I read in high school. So much of her poetry reflected the torment she was going through, that it makes for difficult reading.

Thanks Cindy. I’m woefully inadequate at analyzing poetry, but as soon as I saw the lovely artwork that Sophie Diao created and that she was inspired by “Spinster,” I felt compelled to share it.

I read The Bell Jar just last year and the despair I felt was palpable. A truly gifted, yet tortured soul.

I read The Bell Jar my jr. year in high school, and I’m thinking it’s past time for a re-read.

Wow! That is deep. She was an outstanding writer. It’s sad she battled depression and died.

I have read her poem “The Mirror”, The underlying pain even in that simple poem is evident. She truly was a gem in the literary world.
