I grew up in a small southern California town that had one of those “Indian Schools” and I believe it remains. I have not.
The older children from the school were sent out to work. There was often a boy from the school who cared for our yard. It wasn’t always the same boy but I knew the look. I could smell his fear. They were always so thin. I was usually alone at the house when they worked. I would make the sandwiches, cookies and bring something to drink. They quickly learned what they said to me would go no farther. I grew up to be a mental health professional and I am grateful to them for contributing to my then, rapidly growing perspective of the world around me.
