No doubt most of my fellow citizens here in the U.S. have learned that we have reached the unimaginable milestone of having lost 500,000 people to Covid-19. 500,000 people. It’s difficult to wrap your brain around that figure isn’t it? That just about matches the number of Americans who gave their lives in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam combined. The U.S. death toll is the highest in the world and accounts for over 20% of the 2.5 worldwide coronavirus deaths. Were some of these deaths preventable? Absolutely. Just last week the respected medical journal The Lancet found that 40% of the deaths could have been avoided. It compared the pandemic in the U.S. to other high income nations and discovered much of the blame attributable to Mr. Trump’s “inept and insufficient” response to COVID-19, as well as decades of harmful public healthcare policy decisions. But meanwhile, while most of us are waiting for vaccines to become more widely available, we’re still politicizing mask wearing, social distancing and the vaccines themselves. And to top things off, there are about 31 million people who are uninsured. It’s unfathomable that a country who likes to think of itself as the “greatest nation on Earth” can’t take care of its citizens. If I sound angry and frustrated it’s because I am. For the most part, except for people like our frontline workers, and some instances of heroism and basic human kindness, this pandemic has brought out the worst in us. Selfishness, violence, and callousness that was breathtaking in its scope. And the continuing willingness to use simple lifesaving measures for political expediency is the height of stupidity. If we had any brains at all we’d take a long, hard look at ourselves and our reactions to the pandemic over the last year and change our behaviors and attitudes. Obviously that’s not going to happen. Anyway, you’ll be relieved that I’m stopping my rant now. I apologize, but I’ve been stewing about this all day. Just think though: 500,000 lives gone. People who had family, and friends. People who died horribly, afraid and alone. Many of them needn’t have, and it’s not over yet. If any of you missed it, here is President Biden’s Memorial which aired a few hours ago.
And to think that many of the deaths could have been avoided…

I share your anger, Kim. Simple, steadfast leadership from the beginning could have prevented so many of these deaths, but instead we got rhetoric, sarcasm, and politics. 😠
Like so many, I have family and friends in that heartbreaking total, most notably, my mom’s oldest sister and my dad’s baby sister. Two women, who despite their advanced years, should still be here. Other than age, neither had the dreaded “pre-existing conditions” that put them at risk. But I’ve been told to be grateful they at least lived full lives. 🙄 Yes, people are idiots.
The pandemic isn’t over and we’ll see more lives lost, but at least we can finally see the virus being taken, and handled, seriously. We have hope again.
That was a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace.” ❤

I’m so sorry for the loss of your loved ones Felicia. It’s mind boggling the stupidity that comes from people.
Yes, thank goodness we have responsible leadership now, but everyone has to be willing to “listen to the science” and so many aren’t.

I am so sorry for your loss. It’s so heartbreaking that everything had become what it did while a deadly virus is stalking everyone. Every single person in the world is at risk. Seemed to me, mature people would realized the strait exigency we are in and realized there was dearth room for rhetoric, sarcasm, and politics.

The Lancet article also said that the US needs a single payer health care system, so that all people can get equal access to medical care and vaccine. Our profit based medical/pharmaceutical system, is not capable or willing to do this. They need to make a profit, while pretending they don’t. Our medical system is very sick. Traveling to so many countries, I soon learned, I liked going to the doctors there, more than here.

Yes they did Cindy. My husband and I are on a fixed income and for the last few years have had to choose between paying the rent and insurance. People shouldn’t be put in this position.

Thank you for posting this, Kim. What a difference between the past administration. Having empathy and recognizing those who have passed with respect and understanding instead of trumpeting his own accomplishments.

Yeah. I don’t think we would have seen a memorial from the previous guy. He would have spent the day talking about how he won the election.

More people have died from this than all the deaths in WW1,WW2 and Vietnam…..and some could have been avoided unlike with these wars. chuq

The report I read cited WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, but point taken. The biggest takeaway is how many families needn’t have lost their loved ones.

It didn’t have to be this way!! … “We have reached the unimaginable milestone of having lost 500,000 people to Covid-19. 500,000 people.”

I know your feelings because I share them. As a retired MD, I know what this means and what could’ve been done to prevent this. Like you, we wait for vaccines – today I received two phone calls … to schedule appts. I livein Orange country and the appts were for Broward county – near Miami. I’m in central Florida! Nto complaining … just highlighting the fact that something needs to be done the right way …. didn’t they just land a rover in Mars? SMH …. tight hug, dear one! Thanks for this post …. I have to share!! ❤ ❤ …

I hope you get your vaccines quickly Dr. Rex. My husband is 60 and I’m 55, so we have to wait a little longer.

Something that needs ranting about. And so many people still insist that it doesn’t exist. (Per head of the population, our percentage deaths are the same here. Five times smaller population, 100,000+ deaths.)
Best wishes, Pete.

Kim, 500,000 people. More than who died in both WWs and Vietnam. But, some still won’t wear masks as it is an infringement on their rights. It is not like they are being asked to storm the beaches at Normandy. Keith

Wow 😮 Thats really, really sad. Though we all mourn for them, lets also give thanks to 19,212,524 people who recovered! Stay safe, Kim!

Indeed it’s for those who recovered and their loved ones that’s a blessing, but even for many of them they’re running into long term health complications. And over half a million dead isn’t just sad, it’s tragic, and infuriating when you consider that many would be alive if this had been handled responsibly and things like mask wearing and social distancing hadn’t been politicized.

And while some are finally starting to take this more seriously, if ticking from 22% to what was it, 18% skepticism of the pandemic, is good, then we may be starting to help those deniers understand the seriousness of the problem, finally?

Sadly, I think there are still plenty out there. For instance, just in the House alone, 25% of the Reps haven’t gotten vaccinated.

Members of the House of Reps??!! And they are almost all Ancient!! That’s incredible: do they still think that they are invincible, or immune to everything, as when they were kids, or something?
Oh, wait, most of them still do think like kids, don’t they?
