Harold:
Madam Librarian
What can I do, my dear, to catch your ear
I love you madly, madly Madam Librarian…Marian
Heaven help us if the library caught on fire
And the Volunteer Hose Brigademen
Had to whisper the news to Marian…Madam Librarian!
What can I say, my dear, to make it clear
I need you badly, badly, Madam Librarian…Marian
If I stumbled and I busted my what-you-may-call-it
I could lie on your floor
‘Till my body had turned to carrion….Madam Librarian.
Now in the moonlight, a man could sing it
In the moonlight
And a fellow would know that his darling
Had heard ev’ry word of his song
With the moonlight helping along.
But when I try in here to tell you, dear
I love you madly, madly, Madam Librarian…Marian
It’s a long lost cause I can never win
For the civilized world accepts as unforgivable sin
Any talking out loud with any librarian
Such as Marian…..Madam Librarian.
~ Wilson Meredith ~
My Dad used to have the soundtrack album of ‘The Music Man’. We always sung along to ’76 Trombones’. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Kim, you have to like a name like Marian the Librarian. By the way, speaking of librarians, my wife and I notice that librarians who go on the show “Jeopardy” tend to do well. Must be that well read thing. Now, I will look for a Marian on future shows. Keith

It’s all that research librarians do in order to help patrons Keith.😁

I imagine Mr. Hookorbybook came into your library and wooed you with a song like that!

Three things: Bravo to anyone and everyone who supports books and the maintaining of their order. Second: what a great musical! Third: The Beatles sang “Til There Was You” from that musical and Paul McCartney nails it! Bravo once again to Librarians of all names and titles!

Thanks John. My dad introduced me to The Music Man and we used to March around the living room singing 76 Trombones at full volume, much to my mother’s annoyance. I didn’t know The Beatles covered ‘Til There Was You. I’m going to look on YouTube right now!

For their first several albums, they routinely included cover version of songs…and this was by far the strangest choice! That said, it’s beautiful!

One of my favourite musicals. I have seen it live several times, but don’t think I ever saw the movie. I love this clip. Thanks for sharing it, Kim.

Ha. And I’ve only ever seen the movie!

I love live theatre. That is one thing I really miss. I would see over a dozen a year, some local, some in Toronto and some at small theatres all over Ontario. I would go with my sister or friends and make it a special outing.
