Twenty-six years ago today, one of the worst U.S. domestic terrorist attacks took place with the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City. 168 innocents died that day. Included among those lost were 19 children. The perpetrators of this heinous act were radicalized by antigovernment propaganda, much like what certain domestic extremist groups are embracing today. It’s frightening how little things have changed in over two decades.
Below is a video from country singer Garth Brooks, called “The Change,” which was written in tribute.
One hand
Reaches out
And pulls a lost soul from harm
While a thousand more go unspoken for
They say what good have you done
By saving just this one
It’s like whispering a prayer
In the fury of a stormAnd I hear them saying you’ll never change things
And no matter what you do it’s still the same thing
But it’s not the world that I am changing
I do this so this world will know
That it will not change meThis heart
Still believes
The love and mercy still exist
While all the hatred rage and so many say
That love is all but pointless in madness such as this
It’s like trying to stop a fire
With the moisture from a kissAnd I hear them saying you’ll never change things
And no matter what you do it’s still the same thing
But it’s not the world that I am changing
I do this so this world will know
That it will not change meAs long as one heart still holds on
Then hope is never really goneI hear them saying you’ll never change things
And no matter what you do it’s still the same thing
But it’s not the world that I am changing
I do this so this world we know
Never changes meWhat I do is so
This world will know
That it will not change me

Wow, 26 years, time flies. You’re so right Kim. things haven’t changed very much. I like this song, though.

Terrible, sad day and there was only American terrorists to blame. One change is the cheap availability of assault rifles instead of the expensive method used by those 2 sickos. There’s still the hate.
In 6 weeks it will be the 100 anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre where twice as many were killed. Nothing changed. The hate is still there.

It’s sadly part of the fabric of our society.

We shall all rejoice when there are no more of these awful attacks and they become a distant warning of what once was.

After seeing the attack on the Capitol, I’d say that things have changed for the worse. Timothy McVeigh was not quite a lone wolf but there were very few people in on his plan. He he also wasn’t encouraged by the sitting president. In my opinion, we’ve fallen much farther over the last 26 years.

That video is heart-shredding.

Given what’s happening in the country with antigovernment extremists, it’s more important than ever that we never forget.

I remember that well. I wonder how many others have died from domestic mass shootings since? It seems that they don’t need truck bombs to continue the carnage, sadly.
Best wishes, Pete.

Kim, this was a horrible day. It also shows we have more to fear from our fellow citizens whether it is this or Parkland, Las Vegas or Sandy Hook….than we do from foreign terrorists. Keith

What a tragedy, senseless in every way. It seems like yesterday, 26 years already. 😦
