I don’t know how many of you are having this issue, but from yesterday through last night I received over 1,500 spams all from the same company advertising Cialis/Tadalafil. Last night, after spending over a half hour deleting them all through bulk editor and getting seriously annoyed, I used my mad librarian research skills (Google), and found an easy way to stop this. If you go into your dashboard, click on settings and then discussions, scroll down to the bottom and it gives you the option to type in words for Disallowed Comments. I listed the two drug names and voila! No more spam from this advertiser!

I’m up to almost 2,000 in two days. But they all go with one click of the ‘Empty Spam’ button, and takes about two seconds.

I do like this method because it automatically sends them to trash and you never even see them. Plus, it takes away the danger of you accidentally deleting any friends’ comments that may have mistakenly landed in your spam folder.

I tried to see if this was happening to anyone else yesterday. Thanks for the tip, Kim. I usually clean out my spam daily. Imagine my surprise, when I skipped one day, and suddenly had a count of over 10,000 in my spam folder on WordPress! Yesterday I was getting them at a rate of 100 an hour. I just finished cleaning out nearly 300, so whatever it is seems to be slacking off a little (compared to 100 an hour anyway).
Even so, I try to skim through the headings to make sure no friends are in there, because too many times someone who shouldn’t land in spam does…

Yikes! Over 10,000? Pete commented he’s been getting rid of them by clicking on his empty spam folder, but of course there’s the danger with that of deleting comments from friends that accidentally landed in your spam folder. I liked the disallowed comments option because it automatically sends the offensive comments immediately to trash and you don’t have to deal with them at all.

Sooo aggravating! But since I used the disallowed comments method last night I haven’t received anymore spam from this company.

I thought that this issue was only with me! I really annoys me a lot. I’ve like 50 spams everyday. They stopped few months ago but started again from few weeks back. The first time I’d them, there were like 400-500 of them everyday! Firstly I thought that they were real but then all of them had similar messages when I read them.
Many of them even included links. Though I didn’t clicked any of them!
I don’t want to delete of all them in one go because many times it happens that my fellow bloggers end up landing to spams!

It’s definitely not just you! Using this method sends them immediately to trash so you never even see them.

I get a ton of spam too. It is so frustrating. I go through and delete it everyday. When we came back from vacation, I had almost 10,000 spam emails in my folder. I had to sit there and delete them all.

Yeah. Even the bulk editor only allows you to delete 20 of them at a time. So far disallowed comments seems to be working for me.

I know. Glad to hear that disallowing comments helps. I am torn because we are all trying to build our followings, but I sure don’t want all this spam either. It is a real pain in the butt. 😦

It’s weird how some things work sometimes then not others. I did the same as you when we had the Spanish invasion but they still got through, glad it’s worked for your lot!

I’ll have to try this later. Yesterday of the 15 spams I had, half were these. Today, I had 50 spams and all but 2 were rhese.

I got slammed too, but not quite as badly (642 for me). Most of the bloggers I know got hit with this. I did the disallow feature yesterday and now all that spam is going directly to trash. I’m going to check out Fraggle’s post too. Worst spam attack I’ve seen yet!

I get stuff like that all the time and I’m very lazy with checking with what’s been caught and deleting it all so thanks for the tips to do away with some!

Yeah, I’m used to getting spam, but this was nuts! By last night I had over 1500 of them!

I checked mine right after I read your post and I only had a little over 100 but you’re right it all seemed to be those drugs this time. I’m not even sure why they bother since WordPress is pretty good at never letting that junk actually post.

Thanks Kim. I check my spam folder every 3 or 4 days. In the last 3 days, I was hit like you and had 1100 spam comments. Three of them were real comments that ended up in spam. I hope your fix works for me. I also added porn to that list, because that is the usual spam I get. Thanks again.
