The prolific and much beloved children’s author and illustrator, Eric Carle has sadly passed away at ninety-one years young. Children, parents, teachers, and librarians owe him a debt of gratitude for the enormous contributions he made to children’s literature. A message posted online from his family said he died Sunday and included this poem:
In the light of the moon,
holding on to a good star,
a painter of rainbows
is now traveling across the night sky
Here is his obituary in the New York Times.
I used to know at least a half dozen of his books by heart, reading them to my toddlers. When they were a bit older, I came across a treasury of seven Hans Christian Andersen stories that are illustrated by Carle. A simply marvelous book. What gifts he left behind!

He truly knew what it meant to be a child. It’s been nine years since I retired from being a children’s librarian and I can still recite The Very Hungry Caterpillar verbatim.

I hadn’t heard this news, and it’s quite sad. I loved reading his books to my two daughters. What wondrous gifts he put out in the world, gifts that I would imagine have touched a great deal of people.

What better tribute to provide than the video showing him reading his simple masterpiece! Even better than the Times obit.
He leaves the richest of legacies. Thanks, Kim.

I heard this last night and was so sad. He was truly a talent that touched the hearts and minds of so many children and their parents. My grandchildren can recite the Hungry Caterpillar by heart and they had the caterpillar rattle that came with the book. It was a treasure and was passed on through all three kids. I will play the video for my granddaughter today. Thanks for sharing it Kim.

I see where a fine illustrator of books for preschoolers, Lois Ehlert has just died. Both gave the little ones a fine start on enjoying books.

I think I’ve never encountered his books as a kid (probably because of my French environment). I’ll add that Very Hungry Caterpillar to my TBR now though. 😮

His books are widely available now in Canada. I think you’ll like them Lashaan.

This is a beautiful tribute, Kim. Thank you for that. I am deeply saddened, yet the poem his family has written speaks to Carle’s joy and wonder. And, that’s how it should be.
