Here in Southeast Alabama we’re waiting for the arrival of Tropical Storm Fred. Honestly? Fred? Who decides the names for these storms? I now have the face of Fred Mertz from I Love Lucy stuck in my head. Go away Fred!
Anyway, with flooding rains and possible wind gusts up to 60 mph, and a slight chance of a tornado or two (please no), there’s a possibility that we may lose power, so if I go missing for a bit, that’s why. Here’s my mantra for the next twenty-four hours:
Kim, stay safe down there. I hope Fred passes you by without any difficultly. And I agree the name seems weird for a hurricane. I thought that the first time I heard it.
Kinda like calling a hurricane Bob. 🙂

Thanks Mae. You know, if they’re going to name these things they should make them a little more exotic.

I think they (the Meterological people) name them according to alphabetical order, and switch genders each year. So, last year it was all female names, and then this year, the names will be all male, starting with the letter A.
As for the specific names, they have to choose them by whether or not the names have ever been chosen in history before. I think its very telling that very few of the names of hurricanes ever come from other cultures. They rarely give them Polish, French, African or other names, so that’s interesting.

Yes. I knew they went alphabetically and they actually alternate between genders each year. After Fred, there’s Grace for example. We need more exotic names though.

Please stay safe. I thought they named it after Fred Flintstone.

Thanks Darlene. I wish I had thought of that before I fixated on the other Fred.

I have had Fred Mertz in my mind, too. Here’s hoping Fred loses steam. Stay safe. I have weathered too many of these things so I understand all too well.

Fred is too nice a name for a storm, my Mums name was Freda and she was called Fred for short. Though maybe she’d be happy to have a tropical storm named after her, she was a bit of a force of nature!

I’ll bet she would have been tickled pink!😄

Stay safe and I sure hope Fred just passes by with rain and maybe a thunderstorm. I think Fernando would have been a better choice or even Fredrick (which was my dad’s middle name).

Thanks Carla. I like Fernando!

I couldn’t be scared of a storm that looked like Fred from I Love Lucy. But please take care, you two.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete. They’ve updated the forecast and have it moving directly over us later. The wind has already picked up and the rain is already coming down. Blech!

Good luck! Hope the storm isn’t to bad for you. Personally, my first thought of the name “Fred” would have been Fred Weasley 😁

Thanks Jeanne. It looks like it’s going to pass directly over us now. Ugh. I wish I’d thought of Fred Weasley first.

In Georgia we are waiting for the same thing. I heard on the radio today that there is a chance or tornadoes tomorrow. I truly hope not. Stay safe!!

Thanks Misty. We were under a tornado watch for most of the afternoon but it was cancelled at 7 pm. I hope you’re spared as well.

We had one touch down near us but so far we are good.

Thanks Gemma. It’s a little wild outside, but so far no major problems where we are.

Thanks Don. So far, lots of wind and rain but except for a few flickers our power has stayed on.

Hope Fred doesn’t give you any trouble Kim! When I heard about this storm I just started singing Flintstones, meet the Flintstones. They’re a modern stone age family!

Fred Mertz—I haven’t thought of that name in decades. Let’s hope the hurricane stays out at sea.

We were quite lucky Cheryl. Despite being under a tornado watch, none materialized, and although the lights flickered a few times the power never went out. 🤗

Thanks Carol Anne. It was a little wild, but no tornadoes and although the lights flickered a few times we never lost power completely.
