As you can guess, I’m furious, heartbroken and embarrassed over the disgusting, shameful, embarrassing events of Wednesday. While it’s easy to lay the blame at Trump’s feet, he’s not the only one responsible for the treasonous assault on the Capitol and democracy itself. His sons, lawyers, and the politicians who have encouraged and backed his behavior for the last four years are equally responsible. People like Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, and Alabama Representative Mo Brooks, not only tried to overturn a lawful election, but espoused inflammatory rhetoric in recent days that helped light this fire. They are traitors, not patriots, and if they had one iota of decency (they don’t), would immediately resign. Even worse, Trump’s supporters in Congress, and on right wing media outlets like Newsmax, and Fox News are now spreading a new conspiracy: the insurrectionists that attacked the Capitol yesterday were really left wing activists and Antifa.
Never mind that several leaders and associates of QAnon and neo Nazi and other white supremacist groups have already been identified as ringleaders, never mind that some of these “Patriots” were not just carrying and wearing pro-Trump insignias, Nazi symbols, and confederate flags, but they had visible right wing hate group tattoos.
Ashli Babbitt, the 35-year-old woman who was shot and killed was an Air Force veteran. In addition to being a Trump supporter, she also was a fervent believer in QAnon conspiracy theories. These are not Antifa boogeymen.
Right wing chatter has been going on about the people in helmets, saying that only Antifa wears them, not Trump supporters. This guy here, in the dark helmet—that’s newly elected West Virginia Republican state delegate, Derrick Evans.
The events of Wednesday could have been prevented. If our political leaders had put the country before their political ambitions, this wouldn’t have happened. If the Capitol police had taken seriously the plans of the rioters which were out there for the last few weeks on social media, this wouldn’t have happened. If social media sites like Twitter and Facebook grew a backbone and done more, maybe this wouldn’t have happened. Four people are dead, multiple police officers were injured, yet of the thousands who were part of the attack yesterday, only 68 have been arrested. I’m sorry, but is there any doubt whatsoever that if these rioters had been Muslims, or members of BLM, this would have been handled differently?

While I expected violence yesterday, never in my wildest dreams did I envision the insanity that took place. Our country has its problems and a lot of ugliness has bubbled to the surface over the last several years, but this is not the country I love.
I pray that the events of January 6, 2021 is a wake up call to all of us, no matter our political persuasion, because this needs to stop before something even worse happens.
Like many, this has had a huge emotional impact on me. I’ve been doing a lot of raging, crying, and I’m having trouble sleeping. I’ve decided to take a short break over the weekend, so I beg for your patience. I’m going to indulge in a binge watch of Bridgerton and the 3rd season of Cobra Kai on Netflix, and try to stay away as much as I can from the news. Rest assured I’ll be back Monday, hopefully with my batteries recharged. So to all of you I say, we will get through this. Stay safe!
