I recall reading that Lady Chatterley was immensely controversial.

Most definitely. It was the Fifty Shades of Grey of that time period, although it was much better written.

It was a naughty book. Though I’m sure now, people wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

It’s tame in comparison by far!

I guess people were really prudish back then. I never get why people made a fuss out of sex, it’s a natural thing.

The whole idea behind banned books is both fascinating and infuriating. The powers that be are so afraid of information and a population that thinks…or vulgarity in the case of Captain Underpants hehe.

Speaking as a former children’s librarian, it’s mostly infuriating. You wouldn’t believe some of the stories I could tell you! On e that particularly stands out concerned a mother who demanded we remove all of Stephen King’s books (which of course were upstairs in the adult section) because when she would drop off her 12 year old, he’d go upstairs to read them. Grr.😡

Ugh it makes me angry to as a bibliophile. I was thankfully never banned from reading anything I could get my hands on. I remember when my mother saw I was reading Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (I was under 14 at the time), she told me to talk to her when I got to a particular part, because it was pretty harrowing.
I think “controversial” reading material is a great opportunity for parents to talk to their children about the issue at hand, but I’m not a parent, so…it still irks me because kids will general not read things that don’t interest them on their own, and if they’re reading the controversy, they’re thinking about it, and we need that. You can’t tell children what to think; you have to teach them how to think.

I know! *Hugs* I also was encouraged to read whatever I was interested in with the same caveat:if something bothered me, to tell my parents. BTW, I absolutely LOVE that last line!

I can’t take credit for it! I remember reading it somewhere, and thinking, “Yes! This is exactly how it should be.” I’ll never forget my father saying (when me and my siblings were younger) that he’d tell us what to think. It ALWAYS bothered me even as a child, because I was going to think what I wanted, but it wasn’t until I was older that I had the language to understand and combat that kind of philosophy.
