Last night Vice President-elect Mike Pence decided to see the phenomenal Broadway musical Hamilton. Having been told he’d be attending ahead of time, Brandon Victor Dixon who plays Aaron Burr, read from a prepared statement on behalf of the cast after the curtain call and pleaded for Pence to listen. Unsurprisingly Trump tweeted twice this morning accusing the cast of being hostile and harassing, and demanded an apology. I personally think it was a beautiful and eloquent entreaty that simply addressed the concerns and fears of millions of anxious Americans. I’ll let you decide though.
Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us at ‘Hamilton: An American Musical’. We really do. We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us. Again, we truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story, told by a diverse group of men, women, of different colors, creeds and orientations. Thank you.

Wow if Trump was upset about this he really has a problem . I love what was said and believe it expresses the feelings of most of the country . Not sure how Trump got what he did out of the speech . But he strikes me as someone who will twist anything .

I think this little twitter storm of his was either another impulse of his, or as some believe, a calculated attempt to distract from his 25 million Trump University settlement and the growing bipartisan criticism of his conflicts of interest and his new appointees.😕

So pretty much Donald can say and do whatever vile thing he wants, but a sincere, impassioned speech designed to start a conversation is harassment. The level of hypocrisy is infuriating. Good for the cast of Hamilton. If his supporters attempt to boycott, that will make it easier to obtain a ticket.

Love this so much. Funny thing is, now Trump is demanding an apology and claiming that the theater should be a safe space….but what about all the people that he’s insulted and made feel unsafe…?

IM SCREAMING BECAUSE I LOVE THE HAMILTON CAST SO MUCH. I was debating on whether or not to do a post about this because I don’t really want to stir up a negative discussion because I will protect that dear cast with my life and don’t want to offend anyone in the process and also because I’m not even American haha so I feel like I shouldn’t get too emotionally involved in the politics. But THANK YOU for this post because I think the cast did a BEAUTIFUL thing and took the opportunity to share an important message to Pence. I don’t even know why he had the audacity to walk into a POC musical with a cast containing lgbtq+ people in it conserving all the disgusting things him and trump stand for and ahhhhh I’m just proud of the cast, they were in no way rude or “harassing him” like trump says and any supporters of trump are just under his negative influence. Again, thanks for this post, it was short and sweet and perfectly worded.

Thank YOU so much Emma! I know exactly how you feel. Just when you thought the Hamilton cast couldn’t make you love them more, this happens. When I saw the video online this morning I knew I had to post something. I thought what they did was not only respectful but courageous as well. They have my undying admiration!💁🏻

Exactly. And they asked the audience to stop multiple times. The cast was completely respectful at all times. Of course that didn’t stop Trump from sending out another nasty tweet earlier tonight. Interestingly though, it was quickly deleted. Hmm. I wonder if someone took his phone away from him again!🤔

Lol. 😂 What I think is funny about this situation is Donald Trump asking for them to apologize on Twitter. Why doesn’t he apologize for everything he’s said about women and minorities?

Hate crimes were already on the rise here Vinnie, and since the election they’ve skyrocketed. Plus, so far his appointees aren’t exactly inspiring confidence in that people’s civil rights will be upheld.😕

I loved Hamilton before this, but it made my day to hear what they did that night!
Also, Brandon Victor Dixon told the audience – who started booing when the actor said Mike Pence was there – “there’s nothing to boo about.” How is that harassment?
Mr. Trump really needs to read the Constitution like Mr. Khan suggested. He’d see that the government – & its agents – can’t infringe on the public’s right to free speech. That includes the right to speak out against, or plead for representation from, elected officials. In fact, it’s the essential basis for the freedom of speech.
I’m also incredibly pissed that Mike Pence could call the theater on Friday afternoon & get tickets for that night’s performance of the hottest musical on Broadway. I’m willing to bet he didn’t pay the $2,000+ per ticket that regular seats are going for right now (& he was seated in box seats!).
Great post! I look forward to reading more from you. 🙂

Thank you so much! And I agree. The cast were neither harassment nor disrespectful. It was a heartfelt plea that was made after the show ended. I had to laugh this morning when I read Trump’s latest tweet which in part said that Hamilton is highly overrated. 😏

I don’t think Mr. Trump understands what harassment is. Maybe he just needs a dictionary?
There’s nothing overrated about that musical. I think people know it, considering what the resale prices on weekday tickets are. LOL
I find it hilarious that Trump supporters are calling for a boycott of Hamilton. I’m pretty sure that, if any one of his supporters could get a ticket, they’d be there in a heartbeat. Also, it’s about AMERICA. That’s patriotism & capitalism all rolled into one.
It’s the American way. 😉

Dear Hook or by Book,
This blog is outstanding. The Hamilton cast waited until after the show ended before anything was said. What was spoken was eloquent, heart-felt and representative of how the majority of Americans feel. This was NOT harassment.
It was the cast who stepped forward to end the booing that was started by the audience members when the VP-elect Mike Pence entered the theater.
Hugs, Gronda
P.S, I liked your post on this subject better than mine!

I know some people disagree, but I personally think it was a heartfelt entreaty that spoke for many who are fearful of what is coming particularly in light of who he’s picking as advisors, and cabinet members. It was done after the curtain call and I thought the cast was extremely respectful. This is just my opinion mind you.
