During Banned Books Week every year, there’s a lot of discussion about books and authors who have been banned and challenged. Back in 2017, freelance journalist Karina Kolodny had the wonderful idea of putting together powerful quotes from ten of the most commonly banned books in an article for The Huffington Post, and I’d like to share them. If you have a favorite quote from a banned or challenged book, please feel free share them in the comments.

Did I read that correctly! Harry Potter is banned in America, wow.

Yeah, that’s so weird. The top seller since a century is banned because of their belief that those words/spells are real and can summon demons. Weird!

It’s definitely been more of the commonly challenged or banned books, and it’s still happening today as you can see in my reply to Fraggle.

Not the entire country than goodness. Since they first came out they’ve been a target though, especially in schools. I worked in a public library and I actually was told by an irate parent that I was going to Hell for hosting a “Nighttime at Hogwarts” party.

Haha! I know! The Harry Potter series is sadly one of the most banned and challenged because people think it promotes witchcraft and devil worship.
In August in Nashville, Tennessee, a Catholic reverend banned the books from a parish school on the grounds that “the curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.🤦🏻♀️

Well as I find myself saying far too often, there’s no cure for stupid. Or apparently medieval superstition so it seems 🙄

Enjoyed these quotes, Kim. One of my favorites: “As long as she loves me and I love her, what difference does religion make?”

Out of curiosity why are books banned in America? Is it sex and violence? Sexual orientation? Religious fundamentalism? I’m curious 🙂 .

So many reasons. Violence, sex, gender nonconformity, LGBTQ, Satanism/the occult, politics, anti-cop, language, religion…
