Unsurprisingly another school shooting has taken place here in the US. Yesterday, at about 7:35 in the morning, 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow walked into Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, CA and pulled a .45 caliber handgun from his backpack and shot five of his fellow students. Sixteen seconds was all it took to kill a 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, and to injure two more girls and a boy, ages 14-15. Berhow then put the gun to his own head and pulled the trigger one last time. He is in “grave” condition. It was his birthday. Sixteen seconds. Ponder that a moment. Sixteen seconds that resulted in horrific bloodshed. Two families whose children walked into school yesterday morning but never left alive. Three other families thankfully still have their precious children, but their lives will forever be marked by this senseless act of violence. Countless other children traumatized, who will be dealing with the emotional ramifications of this for years to come. Another school to join an exclusive club that no one wants to belong to.
Sixteen seconds.

I was reading about you one boy was hyperventilating while his dad was trying to comfort him, telling him it was over and he was safe. That just crushed me.

I am long past wondering what it will take to get any change in your gun laws.
Only when the children of ‘important’ people are shot down, may something serious begin to be done. Even then, I doubt it.
I fear you will all have to live with this ‘American Disease’, Kim.

Gun violence and mass shootings are an epidemic in the US Suzan and Republicans are in bed with the gun lobby and won’t compromise with Democrats in enacting even the most basic common sense gun control legislation.

That is so bad, the government is letting laws loose. This is not good at all. Even our country has problems like this but not this big. Shooting by children is so irresponsible, the government should do something 😔✌

Thank you for this post. And I suspect the Republicans in thrall to the NRA will do nothing. They will be remembered for doing the evil of ignoring evil. May they lose every election, so that, I hope, something can be accomplished to end this national nightmare.

I have often said that this kind of trauma, the Mexican immigrants in concentration camps, the daily trauma being inflicted on PoC and LGBTQ citizens, the daily trauma being inflicted on teenagers by mass shootings, is something that’s going to come back and bite us all on the ass in the next twenty to thirty years. We are going to pay for all this in some manner ,and lord only knows what form it will take.
