While almost every day brings some new, cringe-worthy utterance from He Who Must Not Be Named, I thought J.K. Rowling said something that bears worth repeating during her speech last night at the 2016 PEN Literary Award Gala in NYC. Making a plea for tolerance she said:
His freedom to speak protects my freedom to call him a bigot. His freedom guarantees mine.
So, while many of us find his words repugnant and morally reprehensible, it’s important that he continues to have the right to say them. That said, we have the right not to listen.

I love the Donald Grump muppet! I haven’t seen that one. I agree – we need freedom of speech. And I appreciate the freedom to not listen. I appreciate that freedom very much right now. 🙂

I thought Oscar captured the Donald perfectly! And right now I’m also appreciating my tv remote, although by the time November rolls around I’m afraid I’ll have worn out the mute button.😕

I do too. I know she annoys a lot of people, but I like many of her outspoken observations.

I am baffled by this whole misadventure but as you said, he’s free to spout off. It goes beyond him and the saddest thing is that so many people are okay with what he’s saying.

Sadly I think he’s come at a time where people are hurting and their looking for someone who promises them he’ll fix everything. Plus, the fact that he’s not a politician is just icing on the cake. There are really too many reasons to list here. Or, we can go with my other theory that he’s practicing some sort of mind control and this is his first step to ruling the world!

I quoted from this speech on my Facebook yesterday, Kim. I feel like people on both sides of every issue want to silence the other. That’s dangerous and how will we ever find a common ground? Another friend pulled a great quote from the movie The American President that is the same basic premise. We have to defend others rights to speak their mind even when they infuriate us. Otherwise who gets to make the rules of acceptable and unacceptable?
President Obama spoke about it as well recently at a commencement.
Although, honestly, I’ve already had enough of politics. Ready to go into hibernation until it’s over.

I completely agree Mary. Things tend to get nasty in politics but I’ve never seen anything like this year. And look at what happened this past weekend with Bernie’s supporters? I’m ready to go in search of a deserted island somewhere.

Great post!!! The thing is way too many people, including the media is building him up to like unrealistic proportions. He’s just a man, rich or not, that only has as much power as the people who listen to his crap spewing, gives him. He’s not the anti-christ, He’s just a man. I agree with you, regardless of if we like what he’s saying or not, he entitled to run for president and say whatever he wants to say.
Unfortunately, many people agree with him and that makes me sad that there is such hate in people’s hearts for fellow human beings.

Thanks Tamara! I completely agree. Particularly about the media. I’ve lost any respect I had for CNN. They may as well rename themselves Trump TV, as they cover him almost 24/7. As far as the public goes, he’s tapped into their fears, mistrust and anger, and he’s done it quite masterfully. I too am saddened by the hatred shown to other people but that’s always been there throughout time hasn’t it? It’s quite frightening to realize that this man may very well become the next president.😞
