This Is Such A Thought-Proving Post By Laura!
When someone asks me what my favourite book is, I bite my tongue and lie.
“The Grapes of Wrath,” I say, or, “Animal Farm.” I watch as they nod their head knowledgeably and remark, “Oh, such fascinating symbolism, do you remember when …” and then I put on a strained smile, all the while pretending that I have read either of those books.
My favourite book is City of Bones by Cassandra Clare and you might not have not heard of it. It follows a young woman who, on the night her mother is kidnapped, discovers a mysterious underground civilisation called the Shadowhunters, and uncovers a secret that she may very well hold the key to their salvation.
It is a Young Adult book.
Don’t grimace.
I am a life-long reader and have read profusely and hungrily, as if, at any moment, the book might be ripped…

No matter how old I get I refuse to quit reading YA, so what if some out there don’t like it?

Same here. And on the flip side, yes, I read the 50 Shades books too because everyone was talking about them. Wasn’t impressed myself but not embarrassed to admit to reading those either. LOL

I read the first one (and reviewed it here) and I will admit that it definitely pushed my buttons because of what I think is just horrible writing, but I certainly don’t look down upon any fans.

That is just it though, not everyone is going to like what someone else likes. Those that look down upon what others read don’t seem to understand that at all and want everyone to read what they think is worthy. I’ll admit when I don’t like something that it’s just my own opinion and maybe someone else might enjoy it.

I try to do the same thing. There are rare occasions like (I’m cringing here) My review of 50 Shades, and the review I did on The Continent, by Kiera Drake (which I don’t feel guilty for because of the blatant racism in it), but those are few and far between.

I just figure that pretty much every book out there will have someone giving it the exact opposite rating I do. Sometimes I’m with the crowd and other times I wonder what I missed.
But to say I can’t enjoy things because of age is just plain silly.

It’s ridiculous…and a whole lot of sad that people cannot read what they WANT to read without some ‘noted’ bobble-heads passing judgement. Everything has to have a label or be put into a category so we can all feel better – and be even more separated.
Meh.
Genres exist so writers and readers who share a literary interest can find each other; not so yet another system can be created where someone feels superior to those with different world views/interests.
We never learn…despite all the reading being done.

It may not be my sort of thing, but I know many adults who voraciously read YA. They love stories, innocence, and the fantasy worlds described. Nothing wrong with that, as I am sure that it keeps them young.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yeah, this stigma is DEFINITELY out there and it’s really such a shame. If it has good characters and a good plot, why shouldn’t I enjoy it? 🙂 I’m not going to miss out on good books just because some other people think the books are just for teenagers. I’d have missed out on some great stories if I did that. Thanks for sharing this post. It was a good read for sure! 🙂

This is a topic that really needs to be discussed because obviously, from the articles that Laura provided links to, there’s a real snobbery out there.

Yeah, it’s crazy. It’s one thing to choose not to want to read YA yourself, but another thing entirely to try to shame people for enjoying it. It’s so ridiculous.

LOL! I can totally relate to you! When someone asks me for a favorite book they expect me to name some famous realistic adult books that I’m really not fan of. I’m in my late twenties but I still love to read YA’s more than NA and adult books.

Someone should do a survey on why so many adults read YA. I’ll bet the results would be surprising!😊

I get comments all the time on my blog saying that they like my review, but they don’t read YA, because all YA books are exactly the same and are totally predictable. I politely give them a long list of YA books that prove them incorrect.

I know. People assume it’s only the ones that are major motion pictures for some reason. I’m not sure why they do that with YA and not adult books, which have just as many tropes and cliches. It’s interesting.

I read whatever catches my interest, So what if some of it just may happen to be YA, like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson and the Warriors series. I also enjoy stuff like Stephen King and Anne Rice. My reading taste is as varied as my other interests. So what?

It is sad to see the judgement that is passed upon people who aren’t teenagers but read YA novels. I am 100% certain that some of the YA novels out there are A LOT better, much more insightful and even better written than a lot of adult novels too! Even if I don’t hunt after YA novels like a lot of other bloggers do, this is quite a shameful perception of YA novels. I also think some of the movie adaptations enable the hate towards YA novels. That might be another story though.

“Shameful” is a good word for this unreasonable judging of other people’s reading tastes.😡 Hmm. That’s a good question you raise about the movie adaptations Lashaan.🤔

I’m so glad you shared this, very thought provoking for sure!! I love YA!! I think it’s just as important to stay well rounded in reading as it is to well round your food!! If adults are allowed to love ice cream and pizza then why can’t we love YA books too 🤔🤔…
