Like a wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we were, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment.
~ Harlan Ellison ~
I also posted a tribute to him…he wrote the original story that became one of my favorite cult films, “A Boy And His Dog” – and he wrote for many of the greatest TV sci-fi shows as well – https://johnrieber.com/2018/06/28/rip-sci-fi-legend-harlan-ellison-a-boy-and-his-dog-scribe-star-trek-classic-feud/

It’s so sad… He was so talented. I think I’ll have to re-play the point and click game version of his short story “I have no mouth, and I must scream”. Maybe that will be my Game On post for this week! 😔

Oh City on the Edge of Forever still stands out to me vividly – I even have the Fotonovel for it. He brought so much to the field of science fiction, his vision and his insight. Thank you for the tribute.

I have a book somewhere that has his original screenplay for that episode, which is significantly different than the screened version and as much as I love that episode, his original was amazing.

I would love to read that, are you able to let me know the title please? I rewatched Terminator and Harlan gets a credit at the end. His impact will continue…..

What’s a good Harlan Ellison short story or novel to start with?

Keep in mind I haven’t read everything by him, but I personally love “Strange Wine” because all the stories have a dark almost Stephen King-ish tone to them. I also liked “Shatterday”, with the standout story “Jeffty Is Five”. And there’s “Vic and Blood” that contains the classic “A Boy and His Dog”.

Really sad news. The Star Trek episode City on the Edge of Forever is absolutely amazing and pretty much the best episode of the original series. An episode that left an impact and one that I will always rememember …forever 🙂

A huge loss. He had a reputation for being surly, downright curmudgeonly but, many years ago at DragonCon, I happened to be first in line for his signing and we had a few minutes to chat. He was delightful, so much so that I remember the chat and him with pleasure all these years later.

Kim, I saw this, and thought of you!

“On a bitter cold January night in 1965, death came calling at an isolated little cabin on Wake-Robin Ridge. Now, nearly 50 years later, librarian Sarah Gray has quit her job and moved into the same cabin, hoping the peace and quiet of her woodland retreat will allow her to concentrate on writing her first novel. Instead she finds herself distracted by her only neighbor, the enigmatic and reclusive, but very good-looking, MacKenzie Cole, who lives on top of the mountain with his Irish wolfhound as his sole companion”.
Title.
‘Wake-Robin Ridge’ by Marcia Meara.
You might already know it, of course. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
