Republican Senator Mitt Romney announced he will vote to convict Mr. Trump of abuse of power a short while ago. I personally am absolutely floored. While I’m not a huge fan of his views, particularly in regards to Social Security cuts, by going against Mr. Trump and the GOP is nothing less than a profile in courage. His speech from the Senate floor was incredibly moving, and if you haven’t seen it I encourage you to check it out.

But like I said, we should always leave room in such events for a wild card. Romney speaking out like this may have repercussions we can’t see from here. Another thing I’ve noticed is, when it comes to these levels of power, there’s always stuff going on behind the scenes, and always players we don’t know about.

I completely understand your skepticism Pete, and normally I’d be right there with you. To be honest, I’ve always thought he was a political opportunist, but what he did today will make him a pariah in the Republican Party, and most likely result in him being a one term senator. And, I’m sure the death threats to him and his family from Trump supporters have already begun pouring in. I can’t see an upside for him except for his knowledge that he did the right thing.

I find Romney intensely unlivable, so I’m not ready to sing his praises, quite yet. I won’t until I actually see him follow through with this, but I will say, he’s got bigger gonads than any other Republican in that room, and though the bar is set pretty low, he should still get his proper respect.
By openly giving Trump his middle finger, (figuratively), he is inviting trumps ire, and possible retaliation, and that takes an amount of chutzpah I didn’t think he had in him.

I haven’t been a fan of his either, but now that his vote has been entered, short term anyways, I can’t see what the upside will be. While McConnell is saying right now that he’s going to need Romney’s vote in the future, I’m pretty sure that he’s going to be shunned by his Republican colleagues. And unless he switches parties I’m equally sure that he’ll be a one term senator. Plus, can you imagine all the threats he and his family are most likely already receiving from Trump supporters?

Great post and I totally agree. He’s not my favorite politician but this showed great leadership and courage. The thing people seldom think about regarding the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, HIS party denounced him in the end and didn’t support him for re-election. They voted to acquit him, but not to condone his actions. It’s sad that we no longer have leaders like that in this country.
